I have been sailing for over 25 years and today while sailing on Trial Bay in 20 knot s/w saw my first large black thing with a fin on it's back. Not sure if it was a shark or not, I scared it as much as it scared me. I had been having a great time for about 3 hours so decided to call it quits for the day just to be on the safe side.

Yeah I think I saw a shark windsurfing there once too. We were windsurfing in a strong NE wind on a day the mullet were running. Many fishers were putting nets out.

On an outward reach into the sea I spotted this bronzy greyish shape in the corner of my eye. I sailed about another kilometer into the sea then did the best chicken gybe I've ever done and sailed back. I think I called it a day too.

Yeah mullet are running at the moment, professional fishermen are operating from Trial Bay beach.

I wouldnt doubt that there would be sharks there. Once we were there sailing all day and spotted several large 7' sharks. The fishermen caught 17 of them the very next day netting for fish.

From memory (poor at the best) this is a declared breeding ground for grey nurse sharks .

Mates that fish out of swr say that numbers are increasing considerably in last 10 yrs.

Had a similar experience slalom sailing of the beach at hat head just to the south of swr. Whilst I had seen sharks whilst on the water before, they were never this close, nor this big (7ft plus)

Happily sail there

Its a well known shark area but they don't seem to bother anyone and from what I can remember there haven't been any nibbles in that spot.

It's a great sailing spot. I remember sailing in 2-3 foot waves forming off the sand bank in front of the van park

Yep, here he is

Funny how I mixed the subject with the object.

JonesySail, Trial Bay - AKA South West Rocks, is a great windsurfing spot. I'd rank it up with one of the best spots around for windsurfing with a good NE wind and a big swell rolling into the bay.
