Fin size isn't something I had given a lot of thought until recently. But lately I have been doing a bit of experimenting.

This morning, for example, I was over-powered at times on my 5.2m in 23-30knots (w/ 80L evo). Didn't have quite enough time to change down to the 4.7 (would have been perfect ) so I dropped a fin size instead. Went down from a 22.5cm MFC FPT to a 21cm MFC FPT and the results were . The board became more controllable, less bouncy and less spin-outs. The rig felt less powerful and I was immediately very comfortable, even in the gusts.

The wind died while you were changing fins.

Nope, if anything it picked up a knot or two.

Yep a smaller fin creates less lift therefore the board sits flatter in the water, knocks a few degrees off upwind ability. The fin plays a very important part a quality fin can improve the feel of your board heaps.

Reading a boards mag about V and concave bottom shapes shows that fin size is as much dependant on the shape of the board as the strength of the wind. They found a highly V'd board could plane as early as a concave board but with a 3 cm smaller wave fin...

It's made me think about what bottom shape my board has and therefore what sort of fin it should take.

if they spent a bit more time in the pie shop, they'd spend less time changing fins and using stupidly small sails

Yeah concaves seem to channel a bit more air past the fin increasing spin out. The bottom rail tuck edge toward the tail can also effect fin size.

I'd probably go back to the beach for a pie after a couple of hours, someone standing there with a smaller fin, maybe not.

Yep, Leechy, I certainly agree that changing down a fin size makes a hell of a lot of difference. I've often changed a 25cm down to a 22cm to make a 5.4 beautifully controllable in 20-25kts.

Takes much less time than changing down a sailsize. And a lot less time than going to the pie shop, stuffing your face with pies and waiting for the blubber to get stacked on. By which time the wind would have died anyhow.

It's not the size that counts, It's how you use it.
I've found a decent fin can change an average board into a favorite and in light wind two fins are always better than one, sometimes.

Ahh your back Mr no one How did you go up there? I hear you were out on the twin fin so I gather the wind would have been light on that day. Did you get to take out your new red stick?

Hi Juice, who's been blabbing?
The 1st 2 days were on the twin with a new 07 5.7 goya which I spent half the time down at the bommy and loved it. The sail was better than good, it was good good, has a lot wider wind range than the arrows 5.8 and is really fast.
Day 3,4 and 5 were on the "little red stick" with a 4.7 and loves a tight turn. For it's size it takes off early and goes like a rocket.
It's gunna be a good season.

Experiment the gps takes the guess work out, you know when your sailing better, whats good for one is not good for another, keep checking and feeling whats happening under the board, dont wear boots if you can let your toes feel the fin through the board and tweek it,in reality the sale is the engine the fin is the drive shaft.Having said that the smallest bit of sea grass will cock it all up!!!
