Dear helpful windsurfing people

I an looking to learn to windsurf this year but i burn very badly

I have found a long sleave rash shirt in a surf shop but need something to protect my legs .. preferably full length .. i don't really want to wear a wetsuit on Perth as i will cook !

is it safe to wear a normal pair of light cotton trousers ? i'm just a but concerned they will flap around and get caught

idealy im looking for a pair of "rash trousers" does such a thing exist ? if so where do i get them !

Thanks in advance

Sunscreen? How about those long suits snorkellers wear to keep stingers away?

Or a thin wetsuit? You won't get as hot as you might think; falling in the water will help with that, and the wind will tend to cool you off too.

Hairy legs and sunscreen don't go together easily I find. I doubt there's a non-ridiculous way to solve this problem, but it may be worth being unfashionable to avoid sunburn.

You could try a 'stinger suit'. Basically a really thin wetsuit. Plenty in the tropics wear them, so you should be fine. If you get a little warm, go for a short swim

Get back in your box kiter. I'm sure this guy has heard of sunscreen perhaps he is particularly sensitive to UV rays?

One of those lycra suits that Firiebob wears for protection from stingers may be suitable but I don’t know the SPF rating.
For the sake of safety I wouldn't wear anything which gets too heavy when wet. It would inhibit your ability to swim a long distance.
How about a full length wetsuit from thin material, match that with booties, gloves, hat and you'd be well protected.

I have a full length rashie neck to knees that I got from a dive shop. Windsurfing shops for some reason do not stock them. MAybe try a wetsuit shop also. In melbourne I tend to wear it under my 3 /4 summer suit at the start and end of season when the water is a tad cold. I have seen stinger suits in QLD that are much the same

How about a pair of those skins pants? They will help your muscle recovery as well.
I haven't tried them, but they might work.

Hey Ruth

I'll say sorry about the initial comments from the fella's regarding the sunscreen, pants etc...on behalf of us all
We sometimes obviously fail to click on the person's nick name to determine who you are and how new you may be to the whole sport etc...

I'm pretty sure there are some thin (ie 1 mm) female wetsuits available which just have like a singlet top and long legs. I wear a short leg wetsuit with no arms and never get hot in Perth

a speedo swimming suit, like what grant hacket wears. Then if you fall in and sharks come you can just out run them swimming.

seriously though, I would say the advice of a stinger suit will be the go. Check out your local dive shop.

What time of the day do you windsurf? Most people generally go from around 3pm-8pm in these parts, so the UV is minimal.

Actually I find it's only my thighs and the tops of my feet which cop much sun when I'm windsurfing (and arms and face of course) so if you wear long boardshorts and put sunscreen on your feet, that will probably do it.

The stinger suits are like an all over rashie. Can you get them outside Queensland?

taranwen - I was out in my full length rashie this arvo. It cost me about $100 bucks from WA Dive Academy. Of course the real cost is putting up with all the piss taking Apparently this arvo I looked like a participant in a niche genre of German films But skin cancer aint so funny so it's worth it
