Just a thought

With what seems to be a recent spate of windsurfing thefts, Laurie may wish to consider the following idea, plagiarized from Lane Cove Cycle shop web site.

The idea is for Seabreeze.com.au to start a register of stolen gear. This would need to be Limited to items with KNOWN serial No.s. (not just sketchy descriptions or ancillaries) such as Boards/Sails/Masts. (similar for kiting gear) this could be in a Buy&Sell/Lost&Stolen section.

This register could be used to check before people go ahead and make a second hand purchase. It would also double as a reference source for shops trading in used gear. Even the seabreeze For Sale section could insist on serial No’s being quoted!

By registering your stolen equipment you are also logging a third party time stamp next to the serial No. should the equipment ownership dispute come at a later date . Remember if you buy stolen gear it can be confiscated from you (without compensation) buy the authorities and returned to the rightful owner if they can prove ownership.

The strength of Seabreeze.com.au doing this is they have a large coverage (Aus wide) lets face it stolen gear can show up anywere in Australia. Also there really isn't many AUS-sailors who would not frequent this site at some stage.

It would be nice if the register would never be needed!

Good call I know that boards have serial numbers but what about ID's on sails, booms, masts and extensions If there are hundreds of 5m Tushie Rock sails how do you claim it to be yours Are they able to be engraved in some way This goes for booms too
I'd love to see this happen
I think maybe a torture room set up by Laurie for the caught offenders would be pretty fun With a viewing gallery

Great idea.

Greeny, look in the foot of your sail, you may find a tag with a unique serial or production number.

Haha. Sounds good, and not too much effort. Shall throw it into the "great ideas" hat. We reach into the hat now and get to see what gets done next!

Cheers .. Lozza

maybe the ability to point out distinguishing marks could help aswell. "there is a tear in the leach between the top 2 battens near the high wind downhaul mark that I patched with black sail tape"

etc etc
