Hi, apologies to the person who posted the pic below which I stole off another thread about boom lacing.

Sorry if it has been asnwered before but I searched Google and I searched seabreeze, but unless it is hidden somewhere deep down, I cannot find it.

Can anyone tell me exactly what the wee hook on the Severne Batten / Fin Key is actually designed for?
I don't have Severne sails myself (I like them though!) but noticed it on a short windsurf trip recently where they had some Severne sails.

I was musing as to whether it was a bottle opener (never tried), or for somehow using it to anchor the dowhaul line for rigging or ... ???

It's the bottle opener, cause there is nothing better than a cold beer after a great session, Cheers Severne

I think it's actually for when you change battens and have to fish that little loop of twine out of the pocket to get it over the batten tensioner. I haven't had to use it for that purpose yet but I remember wishing I had something shaped like that last time I had that chore to deal with.

Would need more of a hook end for that, imho. What works wonderfully for that purpose is a J-bend (most common) bike spoke. Very thin and the head for the hub end is just big enough to hook the line and pull it out. You can cut one out of a junk wheel or get it for a buck and change for a new one at a bike shop. I've built my own wheels forever so have scads of them around. However, don't recommend trying to open a beer with a spoke.

Severn has always offered a bottle opener on their batten tension tool.

Right , good to know; apart from being challenging to open a beer with, it'd be sort of difficult to keep it in the nice little velcro'd pocket the Severne Batten Tensioner Arrow goes into .... without it working its way out and eventually stabbing you in the big toe :-) . I'm sticking with the beer solution..

Yep bottle opener, Severne sailors love drinking beer after sailing.
