Just got out tonight with a new 6.6 freerace on my 106L JP Freeride. One thing I noticed was the sideways action when the wind dropped out. I was basically pushed sideways. I had a 34" freeride fin.

Quick question - in 12-16kts what size fins should I have on with this set up?

Cheers.

38cm

34 inches is probably a bit too big.

Hmmm,

Yep, that's 86cm, you'd have to wade out a fair way to get going!

Maybe that's what i've been doing wrong!! In all seriousness, thanks for the advice, off to find a good 38" (OK centimetre) fin.

you should get a fin that is the right size for when you are planing. if you drift sideways when you aren't planing, a slightly bigger fin isn't gonna help. just sink the windward rail a bit to arrest the drift.

I used to have a Jp All Ride 106 which i suspect is similar to what you have and used a 36cm Select SRX Free Slam in it with a 6.7 NP Hellcat and it worked perfectly. With the standard 32cm fin it came with it couldn't really hold the sail very well but the 36 was a huge improvement. Tried a 38 a few times and got going early but if the wind got up it would lift the board out of the water and lay it over on the leeward rail. Fun to try and hold it down but it was over finned.

I wouldn't change the fin if it is going alright when planing. If the only problem is when it is slogging, the technique is as swoosh said, really lean the board over so that the windward rail is acting a little like a keel and stops the sideways movement.

34 cm sounds like the right size with a 6.6 and that size board. I either use a 34 or a 29 depending on wind strength with my 104 FSW.

I had the 34 and I'm sure it was too small. I am thinking 37. Remember, this is for lighter wind conditions, 10 - 15 kts.
