Hey guys
I've been trying to match a good second hand mast for my M3 sails for a while
What I've found is that anyone that is selling a sail holds on to the compatible Severne mast until It breaks !
Having said that, advice I am getting on purchasing new masts is to definitely steer clear of the Severne Apex Pro Red that apparently snap unexpectedly.
Get the less carbon Apex blue ??
Whats the go ??

I've had some pretty high speed crashes and my red mast has survived.

The regular (non-apex) red-line masts have lasted very well for me, more than 10 years easily.

Haven't had problems with my red (370) or blue (400) rdm, but I try to keep them out of the sun and they are for my small sails which don't see as much use as the ones on the 460/490 (ezzy and GT masts though). 530 90% SDM Apex is different, broke two of those. Not sure about smaller Apex sizes as they aren't anywhere near as common here.

I have seen one or two blown up red rdm that I think was left hot and downhauled on the beach. They really don't seem to take the heat well.

So Red line severne RDM s are less likely to break Great !
For a 7.8 Mach sail you need a 460 Severne specific mast
Apex Red should be the go to but Severne don't replace if under warranty BUT they will an Apex blue ??? Is that correct?
And if so , is that because they can spontaneously break ??

I think the policy is replacement if <1 year (except for the yellows which is two years I think?) but you'd have to talk to your shop

Apex red and blue are the same except the blue has 1 extra layer of glass around it to help with impacts.
I've used blued for years with issues at all, shame your not in Canada as I have a new 460blue for sale

Hi Andy, I've had apex pros red for the last 5 yrs no problems (I've had M3 and now M5). Matching the mast to the sail is really important particularly for Match race sails, as the large cams (on 7.0 above) need to fit correctly for good rotation.

Alot of the other racers use apex blue, the reason being the cam wear on the mast. I don't use my sails that much so I don't have too much wear and im careful with my gear. If you tend to get some sand regularly in the luff, you'll get more wear and less life out of the mast.

The older severne masts work fine, in the m3 and M5, just shorten the rear of the cams, by up to 5mm. The apex masts are tapered so narrower were the cams sit.

I posted before how to do this.

The 90% masts have a layer of glass under a "cosmetic" layer of carbon, so excessive wear will show the glass underneath.

The glass makes it more durable, when it eventually get bashed around.
