Be aware of scams (not just on seabreeze) when selling gear online

We had fella manually emailing quite a few sellers over the weekend - visit (Check the .gov site for more info
www.scamwatch.gov.au/types-of-scams/attempts-to-gain-your-personal-information
)

Some samples of what they write:

Hello,

Reffering to your advert placed on the site (www.seabreeze.com.au), i am
pleased to tell you that i would buy it. i shall be glad to hear from you soon.

Your faithfully

Peter John.

Hello Seller,
Please am interested in purchasing your ITEM and I will like to know the present conditions?
Get back to me with your asking price.
Thank you
Jenny

There's a few versions of the scams Hairy,

Here's one . Buyer gets freindly and agrees to buy the gear plus pay freight, you agree to send it, he pays by cheque to your bank account and it registers (but not yet cleared). You don't read the fine print. Gear is sent (probably for collection at a depot), cheque bounces a few days later.........sucked in.

Another one is that now they have your name and bank account details, you receive an email that looks exactly like one from your bank with your name and account number on it, asking you to log in and confirm details etc. They then have all they need to access your account.

They also use details like that to set up loans etc in your name.

Other one is:

"I see you are selling a $500 sail. I have a cheque for $5000 made out to me. I will write on the back "please pay John Smith" and post it to you so you deposit it, $5000 will go to your bank account for your $500 sail/board etc.
I TRUST YOU as the seller and you sound like a good bloke so so so much that I know you will send me back the $4500 balance a few days after the transaction."

That is the common one for somebody purporting to be a UK buyer.

Can't believe people actually fall for that one, maybe because the so called buyer trusts the seller so much they think he must be a good bloke.
Yeah right, and the 18 y/o Russian supermodel girl really does want to come here and fulfill all my desires if I can just send her $1000 for a plane ticket.

Well I'm from Geelong. We've got the best of scammers, Messsers Roy and Rau from Chartewell and Messers Farrow and Clarke from Pyramid to name a few. These scammers that Laurie raises might even need a few pointers if they want to raise some serious cash.

Feeling a bit gullible right now having sent my details to this person, but the bank assures me there is nothing the person can do with just the account no.
Jenny Brodsky was her pseudonym.(supposedly living in London), I did ask where she learned of the ad, because all the details of the board were on the site. Won't be dealing with anyone from overseas in future. Also closed the account thanks to a warning from seabreeze. Thanks Laurie...

One more thing before I forget, is Yahoo.com an australian isp and would it give away someone's location?

Yahoo isnt an Aussie isp but does have a .au domain as well as the straight .com (I think they have a few more country domains as well)
If you are using a Yahoo mail account that was set up in Australia, it will usually be [email protected] This is generally an indication that the sender is in Australia (unless they have moved o'seas after creating the account).
