Hey folks, old posts show that Sandy Bay is good for slalom and "Graveyards" is good for wave sailing...

Where is "graveyards"? Either the locals dont know, or they are not telling...

Any other spots worth trying?

Not a local only sailed at a few places, Yardie Creek is pretty good. If the SW is blowing on the way up try the Gascoyne River mouth at Carnarvon. Launch from the northern bank, nice swell in the middle and some pretty flat & fast sections on the far side.

Has been a few years since i sailed there. i also had to find the spots by trial and error. Hope this makes it easier:

GraveYards: Head out towards the National park (NP). On your right you will see sandy/rocky tracks that head towards the sandunes. Most of the way towards the NP, but before you hit the ranger station at the entrance of the NP, there will be a couple of turn offs....you dont need a 4wd, it is a real short and easy drive in. I found the spot by accident after I spotted a couple of guys kites over the sand dunes. I rigged up in the carpark and carried the gear over the small dune - saved trying to rig in the nuclear winds. Watch out for turtles here, they are as big, and some bigger then 4wd tyres, and there are lots of them - or there was the fortnight I spent there. There are several known turtle rookeries in the area around graveyards, so the number of turtles should not be surprising. The spot is a nice choppy/flat section of water on the way out to a soft and deepish reef.....my fav spot up north WA

Lighthouse: when there is a good swell there is a great long wave in front of the lighthouse

Get into it. When I was there i sailed a heap at graveYards, and each time I was sailing with 5-6 guys from Perth............so the locals must have another spot somewhere......Graveyards was fun enough for me though

Was a secret spot 5 years ago when i lived there. Then someone told a kiter where it is and all of a sudden you could see it from the road.

It is a turtle nesting site and with all the increased activity there now ( i was there in September and blown away buy how well known it is ) it is only a matter of time until it is closed for access and i believe it is already being discussed by Calm.

Apart from that i wouldn't get too excited about going unless you are prepared for sailing 3 k's out on the edge of the reef, have the appropriate safety gear, know your way around and understand the tides.

Oh yeah, and enjoy the company of large sharks.

enjoy !!!

Be really careful on an outgoing tide. If your rig falls to bits near one of the gaps in the reef you will get a free trip to Cocos Island, or thereabouts.

Sandy Bay is probably the safest but not at all exciting except for the surroundings.
Considering all the hassels taking up your gear, it's probably not worth the effort.
Take your surfboard up and go surfing. That's always good value.

Pretty sure we found GY, but didn't look all that flash, without going out some distance, and the lighthouse looked like a big distance just to get out there.

Without sailing with a local, I'm not so keen on sailing over the top of coral reef... something about kicking it and smashing it....

Decided on Sandy Bay - really nice water. good wind, lots of flies, if just a little dull in the sailing department.

Matthew, if you get a strong SWer, you can have lots of bump/jump fun in the vast area before the reef.

regarding the reef, WA is full of it. I found the graveyards area pretty sandy for much of the flat water area though........maybe you have not located Grave Yards correctly? A few of the turn offs before and after graveyards are turtle rookeries, and the reef pretty well comes all the way up the beach - so save the turtles, and your skin, and find Grave Yards instead..................even for a guy who likes bump/jump, there are plenty of swells and ramps that make it through the reef section to have a blast

Hope you get that SWer today courtz
