Hi all,

Been windsurfing most of my life but over the last 15 years haven't updated much of my equipment until now. I've picked up a couple of 2nd hands sails which don't match my mast (an old 465cm with a DIN of 6.8). It not only looks to be too soft but also a bit thick.

Trying to pass the mast through either sail (both have several full cams) is difficult to say the least. The sails are a North Prisma (5.5m) and a Sailworks Bravo (6.5m).

I've faced the obvious that a new mast is the go but will it make rigging these sails THAT much easier? I'm used to an old Gaastra slalomfoil with external cambers and that was really simple. Had to give it a bit of a shuffle along the mast to get it on but not a real issue.

What concerns me is how much the sail creases when I'm attempting to rig them with this old mast and of course both sails are monofilm so don't want to totally stuff them. Is there a secret to rigging these full cam masts or is most of my prob about stuffing something too thick into a tight sleeve. (yeh yeh ... that didn't sound too good did it!!)

Would appreciate any advice.

Cheers,

Penski

See how you go if you forget trying to slide the mast into the cams and sleeve all in one go..

Some sails are easier if you miss the cams out, get the mast in the sleeve, give it plenty of downhaul (like really plenty...), and then tonnes of outhaul, and then just gently pop the cams onto the mast. Once the cams are seated, back off the down and outhaul to the right settings..

But, you've probably hit the nail on the head by identifying the need for a new mast or two. It may not make rigging the sails much easier, but it's bound to make them handle and feel a tonne better.

Thanks 555.

I've got to admit the Sailworks Bravo is a bit harder as there is no zipper access to the cams (and admittedly the shape of the cams indicates it's expecting a slightly smaller diameter sail at the cam points). So if you don't have the cams sliding along the mast as you rig there isn't much room left for the mast and reconnecting the cams to the mast inside the mast sleeve is pretty difficult.

Is there any Sailworks owners out there who have perfected the method of rigging with the advantage of zippers in the mast sleeve???

The creasing of the sail just freaks me out!!!

I've only had old broken sailworks synchros 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5 (cammed) and a 6.5 non-cammed gaastra matrix

Pretty sure you need to crease the sail to get the bend/get the mast in (but i've never had the right mast for the sails) initially, then when you downhaul, the sails get nice and tight

But dunno your degree of creasing

Most prob better mast

You must have one the very original masts which are a larger diameter to the standard diameter masts (SDM) used today. They won't fit many of the sails that came out designed for the SDM mast. Best bet is to get yourself a new / used mast. Should be able to pick one up for about $200.

Hey all ... thanks for the replies.

Yes ... went down to WindSurfnSnow at Collaroy (NSW) and Chris had all the info and gear I needed. Picked up a v.nice 2nd hand Pryde mast, some extra battens, and fin repair kit.

Went home a rigged up to check it out and it was perfect. It was definitely the diameter of the old mast that was causing the dramas. Can't wait to get it wet now although may have to take a chisel to the dust on the old AHD Omega 285(circa 1990).

My next challenge is to see if the boom clamp will close tight enough on the smaller diameter mast!?

It's great to deal with someone with so much passion about what he does. Could have talked all day. So a big thumbs up to the guys there. If you haven't been there - check it out!

If your boom doesn't clamp properly on the mast you may want to get a boom/mast collar (not sure of the exact name). I have two of them, bought one from Wind Surf and Snow and got another one when I bought a new NP X6 mast.

Where do you plan to go sailing?

Used to do Narrabeen Lakes all the time but haven't been there for years (at least 15yrs).

Of the odd times I go out ... Box Head (North end of Ocean Beach, Umina) is the favourite when the Nor'easter works there ... just magic.

Had a few good sessions on Lake Macquarie (near Cam's Wharf) although the Razor Shell episode and resultant 10-12 stiches in the foot was a dampener. There was also a snapped fin episode. Hmmmmm perhaps I don't like Lake Macquarie that much after all!???

Given most spots a try but the last 10 years or so it's been pretty infrequent. Two updated sails will get the interest going again.

Thanks W4W ... that's a very generous offer but I never get down to the South side. Although I still have my 1991 Slalom Series t-shirt re the events that used to be held there then - never made it down but always wanted to. Showing my age now I guess.

I'm based North West so I think I'll be baptising my "new" 2nd hand gear at Box Head.

When you get the Nor' Easter working on a fulllish incoming tide it's just the best. Flat water with some small ramps on the sand bars and a tide that pulls you upwind. Sounds too good to be true but when everything is aligned ....... the best Jerry ... the best! (Sorry - couldn't resist a Seinfeld line there).

The only downside is that if it doesn't work, you've driven up the F3 for no reason although spending the arvo lying on a quiet beach isn't all bad.
