I have had bags repaired by Barracuda Sails in Sydney. The have the right sowing machines, zippers, runners and patches to get great results.
So it must be cheaper to get them fixed than buy another then..
I have had Barracuda repair zippers by replacing the slider and also replacing the entire zip. In my experience, replacing a metal slider with another metal slider is just going to corrode again. Even if there is no moisture on it, it seems the water vapour is enough.
The best repair I have had was one I did myself. I am not sure if the sailmaker would have done it because the material is so think and hard to get at with a machine, but I bought a couple of metres of nylon zip and some sliders online, and sewed it in place by hand. I left the original smaller zip in place and just sewed it to that material. It took a week or so while watching TV of an evening, but its a pretty good job. Not pretty, but serviceable! I used the same nylon that is used in fishing lures, so hopefully it lasts.
