What is the best and safest stuff to use, to get the adhesive off my sail, left from removing sail stickers ?

Thanks

Toluene, under the counter from small hardware stores only. Some stores have a copy product which is O.K. but nothing like original. Oh, wear a chemical mask and do outdoors!

Eucalyptus oil works brilliantly at removing the sticky stuff. And it’s non petroleum based so wont affect the monofilm.

I know it sounds crazy, but brake fluid works to remove texta sail numbers from sails, and I expect it removes glue residue just as well.

Does anyone know what solvents do ruin sails? I have tried brake fluid successfully, but using acetone sounds a bit worrying.

Azz,

Non chemical way.. get out your trusty hair dryer and just blast the residue (careful not to get the sail too hot) and then just scrape it off

Methylated Spirits works nicely.. and won't leave you sterile (Toluene will if you breathe enough of it!)

My vote for Eucalyptus oil too - cheap, and wont kill you or your gear.

shellite - available at any hardware. No problems on monofilm.

Yep, Shellite, which is just petrol without all the additives and coloring. Petrol works to but not as nice as shellite to use.
Don't breathe it too much though! :-)

Petrol....but dont get it near the seams- they are taped together. Clean off with euch oil, then soap n water.

citrus based cleaner...you can get it in a small spray bottle and won't hurt your gear.

for monofilm acetone works a treat... just don't go near the logo's printed on the sail or you will have a no-name..

Brake fluid is rather strong stuff. I have used any number of chemicals on a sail that I bought which previously belonged to a professional. However, nothing I used harmed the monofilm. I discovered, though, that some adhesives are stronger than others. Bic stickers were so difficult to remove that I thought they would make great sail repair material.

Excellent point. I wouldn't take another off. It's too much work.
