Have you traveled to the US or Europe with them?
Their website looks informative and it looks like if you fly via the US, then the 'per piece' charges are used instead of the per kg rate, so I think it would be cheaper that way.

I just looked at the AirNZ site and looked at some fares and it looked good in that you can get a lot of flights that transit via the US, and I think that might be your key to saving on the excess luggage rates as they will be per piece.

There is also an option of buying some kit from Dahab itself or the UK if it helps. They tend to sell off their last years stock.
