Well, it certainly won't be "easy" paddling 3 or 4 klms back to land when your rig falls apart.
I think Mobydisc was suggesting you put a modern rig on it because old gear is extremely unreliable and will more than likely leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere with a broken boom or mast.
Unless you have oars, like in the video above, then upgrading the mast, boom, universal joint and all ropes is an extremely sensible thing to do. Even brand new gear breaks... plenty of us have had to paddle back klms to shore and it's not a fun exercise.
Just like any type of boating activity, be sensible and put safety first.
