I noticed that too. Trying to decrease distortion in the boom/rig?

yes. It is a one sided boom. Patrick was making them when we were there in 2013 for a few of the sailors. The idea is to eliminate the drag and turbulance on the low pressure side of the sail.

Luderitz is strictly one way, and get a trailer ride back, so it makes sense to try it.

They were basically just cutting up a carbon boom and glueing it together again on one side. The extra piece from the lee side is put inside the normal side to make it stiff and strong. Boom width from the sail is the same. If I go back there again, I will try to do the same with an alloy boom 'cuse I'm cheap.

Here is one he made for Karin.

In that case ,you only need two foot straps ...what else can be eliminated .

Yes, they have only two straps, they thought about that! And only half a fin! Asymmetrical fins.

Your harness lines would last twice as long too.

I'm pretty green when it comes to speed sailing.
What s the difference. Between a speed sail and a race sail .
cams, battens ,shape ..??

nothing it is which ever one you can sail faster on you don't need cams to do 45knots, but it sure helps if you want to average 45 over 500m.

Slalom, Speed, Race, the shape/profile can be tuned to varying degree's just by tuning battens, cam spacers. Rotation not important if you only have half a boom and gybing not important but a more locked in stable shape is.

...sadly not the cost of entering/logistics to get there from afar, was worth it, good times,... though the wind was lacking in 2013.

The one-sided boom is actually more about allowing the sail to breathe than the turbulence. They have such deep profiles on the speed sails that it would touch the other side of the boom.

Bjorn's boom was made by Cape Dr. in Cape Town.

In the first few minutes of this clip Bjorn claims asymmetrical booms minimise air flow (laminar?) disruption on the lee side of the foil.
