Gday people

I am new to the whold windsurfing thing as I said, and thought this looked like the place to ask a quick couple of questions. I posted a 'wanted' post in the buy & sell catagory, as I'm trying to get hold of the boom pieces/extender on my bambora boom to fit a sail that is longet along the bottom than the stock sails. Does anyone know much about this? I am assuming you can buy/make some extended versions of the inserts that are already there in the adjustable boom? I will paste the measurements I have below so that it makes some kind of sense! The diameter of the inserts are 2.5cm & 2.75cm approx respectively.

- the boom measures 225cm toal and I need a length of at least 250cm to fit the sail. I have pieces that can be taken out of the boom, and they measure 45cm, is there a way to get longer bits?

Thanks for any help
cheers

I dont think you will have much luck finding longer extensions for that boom. 45cm is pretty much as long as you can get otherwise the extension can foul on the curve of the boom and it weakens the boom too much- the rear of the boom is the least stiffest part so it puts more load on the stiff front section of the boom which will lead to failure.

I would buy new since they arent that expensive but I guess that is a relative thing on how much you sail. You can also buy secondhand but be sure to check the head of the boom has no cracks and there are no signs of corrosion- "bubbles" under the grip is probably the worst sign. Generally good brands to look for secondhand are North or Chinook. Alloy booms have a limited number of cycles so by keeping your current (if it is old) might be putting off the inevitable and sailing back with a broken boom aint fun. New booms also have simple head clamp systems and a better pin system at the rear so they are often easier to setup than the old booms.

My suggestion is to go speak to Simon at Board Crazy, he will help you out and the stuff he stocks is good quality

Hi there.

I think whats needed here is a rethink. I'm guessing but your sail must be
a. Old or
b.BIG ..if you need a 2.5m boom length.

Finding an extension piece to your boom might be a problem.

I would do this.
Take your mast and go into your nearest windsurf shop and buy a second hand sail and boom that will fit on the mast.
If you are a beginner I would recommend a 5.7m sail and boom to suit (160cm-200cm adjustable probably)
This shouldn't cost you more than $150 for an oldish sail and $100 or less for a good second hand clamp boom.
You may have to buy a mast extension ($50).

You would have real trouble uphauling a sail with a 2.5m boom length unless you got arms like king kong and a little more modern sail will make you windsurfing experience more enjoyable.

Hope this helps

Thanks guys, looks like I might rethink things - I have 2xsails that fit the original boom, and both sails have batons, the general shape being that of sweepeing up from the bottom, and jutting out a bit at the top, sort of like the nore modern sails. However, all this weight up top is a bit heavy for my little bro, so I picked up three sails at the market, for $5 each. The one with the 2.5 boom is very traditionally shaped, that is like a triangle with much less square area but a longer and lower boom length, does this make sense? (OLD)It also has a sleeve for the top metre - no sail, so I'm guessing its a beginners sail. I'm unable to cough up much for a $5 sail!! I will keep a look out for an old boom to suit rather than weakening the current one. Cheers

G'day Kompressor,

Sounds like you've picked up some really old gear! Strangely there is still windsurfing gear about from the 70's and 80's which should really be in landfill (or if it's in good condition in a museum)

There's heaps of newer secondhand gear available now, why not ask some local sailors if they have anything you could have for free if you're on a tight budget?

After a couple of years of sailing everyone ends up with their 'old' kit lying in your shed, it's normally 'too good'(sentimental value) to throw away but the shops won't give you anything for it if it's more than 5 years old.

I've got 3 sails lurking in the shed, 5.3wave, 6.4 freeride, and my old favorite a gaastra 5.5. (none more than 6/7 years old)

I'd be quite happy to give it all away to someone who wants to learn (only I'm in WA so that doesn't help you!)

Just ask, I bet you can get a half decent rig together for next to nothing.

$5 no great loss, they make good decorations hanging from the roof of your patio . What size sails have you actually got (it will generally say near the bottom of the sail or maybe on the bag).
