I'm halfway thru this great book at the moment.
It's titled 'Shakey', Neil Young's Biography by Jimmy McDonough.
Here's an excerpt from it:

"I bought this Beaulieu super-8 camera and I was workin' with it. And I worked with it and worked with it. Super-8 made me ill. I got sick. I think I musta OD'd on it or somethin' -- I was so into it. I got a fever."

"It was like when you eat some poison and you get sick, you never wanna have it again. After that, every time I thought about filming I got sick. That was the end of it."

"It's a little like windsurfing. I was really into it. I got all the equipment, and I windsurfed a couple of years. I thought about it a lot. Read windsurfing magazines."

"Finally one day I realised -- F#ck, I could just be doin' this for the rest of time, just buying equipment. New equipment comes every four months. Windsurfing's great, but I'm not really very good. I never was able to get a jibe down. So I stopped. But I did it for two or three years. It totally distracted me."

So he got into kitesurfing? Whenever I watch a kitesurf video or watch people kiting one thing that strikes me is they don't gybe.

NY came to Oz around 1985-86, he chased up some windsurfing while he was here, I think he was lent a Mistral longboard. We (my business) gave him one of our t-shirts and he wore it on stage in one of his concerts. A pic of him appeared in the Sydney papers. We were so tickled pink....I think it was a pink shirt too. Yeah big deal and it was long ago but thanks for the memories waveslave.

Going sailing now, BOM sez ENE 14-18 knots...might practice on the shortboard.

I mean he quit windsurfing coz he thought he was not that good and he could not gybe. What came next, kiting?

I know who Neil Young is but did not know he windsurfed.

Waveslave thankyou for an informative post.
Factual, with quotes, and very interesting to know Neil Young windsurfed for a while.
Makes a change from trolling so congratulations again.

Waveslave posts something interesting and informative.

Waveslave, are you feeling ok? Or has someone nicked your login details?

Just kidding - don't want to reduce the karma levels on the board in case it affects Huey this weekend... greens all over the place in VIC. Bring it on...

Does Ian Young sing?
I never heard him singing.
Loud shouting at his students quite often but I don't think that was singing.
It was??
Well I never. It wasn't at all tunefull.
Did he cut any tracks?

check out the wife beater he's wearing...

I lent Neil a Mistral Malibu for a couple of weeks while he was he in Sydney staying up at Palm Beach. He owned a Mistral Malibu and Mistral Tarifa back in the USA.
He played every night and we all turned up to the concerts late every night in a Toyota Tarago with Neil still in his wetsuit.
This clip is from LIVE AID, He loved that shirt I gave him, MISTRAL "Red Hot Dot." But he did cut the sleeves and neck out of it. The Grunge look I guess.
The nicest guy you could ever meet.
Other "Mistral Shop" clients were Dire Straits, Police and Bruce Springsteen. I still have a pair of Bruces Levis he left in my car somewhere.

Rick, you might wanna edit your post. I'm not sure Bruce Springsteen leaving a pair of his jeans in your car is something you want a lot of people to know about let alone the fact you still wear/have them

maybe neil didn't get many blowjobs after going windsurfing.

unlike backstage after a gig!

hard to have the world at your feet and then realise you can't jibe.

Speaking of musos from that era, Ivor Davies from Flowers/Icehouse windsurfed too, quite a fanatic I believe.

He so did so. He even wrote a song about kitesurfing before this...

"Hey, Hey, My, My, kitesurfing is so damn fly",
