A few nights ago, A Current Affair ran a story on an 11klm stretch of coast line on the Mid North Coast of NSW which a few locals believe to be a nursery/breeding ground for Great White Sharks. The programe did not name the beach or town area for some reason ( maybe due to the possibility of fear mongering?...affect tourism to the area???....trophy hunters???). Anyway, they showed juvenile sharks at 2-3 metres, and some a little older, and bigger, at 4 metres, cruising 50-100 metres from the beach. They noted 10 sharks in total for their morning of filming, which the local record keepers suggest is 10 fold of usual for the area!
The footage showed the very close proximity of these sharks to swimmers and surfers, who looked oblivious to what was being filmed, sometimes with the sharks swimming through the surf, right to where the swimmers were. I emailed channel nine wanting to know where this stretch of beach was, as the footage didn’t show enough of the coastline for me to name it with 100% certainty…..on reflection, it sometimes looked like the back beach of Angourie……………….anyway after 2 days, channel nine have not answered
A similar story was run on Today Tonight (A Current Affair's shabby cousin) about 12 months ago, with some uni students catching lots of juvenile GWs (2-3 metres) off a Newcastle surfing beach and tagging them for research. Maybe this was where it was….don’t know…….anyone recognize the beach in the Current Affair footage or know of where this was??

stockton to Birubi beach north of Newcastle. Great westerly wind location for wavesailing

It will be as MA said.
I used to look after lighthouses etc on the coast of NSW and often took a helicopter along the stocton bight from Newcastle to Port Stephens.
The sharks are many and yes nearly all sharks we sighted were all so close to the break the suction of the break was actually moving the sharks.
I personally will still sail at Birubi but not a chance of sailing south along the beach..I used to, but after seeing the sharks I think twice.
BTW........have a look at the dvd "Land base game addiction" filmed on the Port Stephens southern headland.
Makes one think.......doesn't stop you, but the waterstarts get really good and quick.

MA and MooseJaw are correct
The beach is Stockton whichg stretches from newcastle harbour all way to Birubi beach/Anna Bay (Animal Bay)
Same location wher A Current Affair di d earlier story on Great Whites being caught and tagged off the beach !
Keen to know if atest story show them using lots of bait to attract the sharks...
AS MA says - great westerly wind location for wavesailing and it works pretty well in an east nor easter... too much north and its becomes more offshore and very gusty
