That AHD Summer Board is an amazing new concept.....Imagine the novelty of a board that's 3.66m long, 66cm wide, shaped like a giant Mal, weighing about 1 kilo for every 10 litres, and designed to be used in light winds, strong winds and surf.

Just like one of these!

With the Kona, Windstyler and now AHD all creating big Mal-type longboards for summer fun it's nice to see that the Wally concept is uber-trendy again.

Jeez, we've been old fashioned dags for so long I don't know how we'll handle being cool again.......

Chris - that's great that there are longboard comps again, or at least the interest in the fun board. Are these comps a recent thing that have started? Is it somewhere on port phillip bay?

Haircut, the One Designs have been racing at Dobroyd (Iron Cove) and Narrabeen in Sydney and at Parkdale Yacht Club on Port Phillip Bay for years. We get 35-45 boards at national titles and now we (in NSW at least) are concentrating on the club level sailors and getting kids into the 3.5m and 4.5m sails. We're getting up to 13 "big rigs", a few kids and half a dozen beginners during twilights at Dobroyd.

I think Parkdale has 20 boards owned by members and gets 8-12 or so each weekend in the summer; I don't know how many did the winter racing at Sorrento.

If you go the website you'll see Mark Lloyd's email on the "contacts" page; he's the man to talk to if you're in Victoria.

Other longboards are very quiet outside NSW, where there are active fleets that get a dozen or more at Dobroyd and Illawarra, a couple of smaller areas, and a strong group hopefully reforming at Taree after some club reshuffles last season.

i'm on the goldcoast but used to sail the big board when i was a kid down in victoria.

I was curious to know if there was an increase in participants over the last year or so? Quite a few more people windsurfing up here lately. France has apparently had a singnificant increase windsurfing sales and participation. We now need some custom board builders to re-open
