I was renting a 2011 Starboard Flare 98 Wood... Then during a gybe I crashed and fell with my knee between the nose and the mastfoot of the board. My knee went trough the upper deck and there's now a huge ding the size of my knee there that's about 6cm deep. The board has got no structural damage apart from the huge ding of course.

Anyone have insight into what would be a fair price to pay to the surf rental place for this kind of damage?

You could just bog it up for a couple of bucks, but to put it back the way it was is much more complicated, one of the disadvantages of wood deck, very hard to patch it invisibly. I've never tried much too hard.

I put a harness hook through the tiki logo on the deck of my Starboard wood sonic during a failed gybe attempt recently. A professional repair including spray painting in a similar colour to the wood cost me $80. I repainted the Tiki logo myself.

it'd be more than $150 and less than $500

My first question would be, should you be able to make a dent 6cms deep with your knee?

Would that be for a professional repair including graphics?

6 cm is my rough estimate, I might be wrong, maybe it;s only 3, but the point is that the dent goes down to the core of the board where the foam is. But yeah I was also kind of surprised how easily my knee went trough the deck, speaking of which...

It only has some small superficial skin damage, my knee was definitely the winner, fortunately.

Is that a board of similar value and repair complexity? From what year was it?

Also, since you did exactly the same, do you remember what happened exactly? I can't remember because it all happened so fast. All I remember is that I was bearing off downwind going very fast and then initiating the gybe in very choppy conditions. Next thing I know I'm in the water with a big hole in the board.

You get pulled over the front of the board by the sail, and land knee first on the board and then over the front.

If its a rental board... why are you repairing it ?
Are you looking to get it repaired and then take it back without them knowing or you telling ?

I'm not. At least, not yet...

No of course not!? I was just trying to gauge the cost of such a repair because he had to think about it and we would discuss it today. Anyway, it's probably already settled, I'll probably just buy the board and take it home with me.

Id think if they are renting a board there would be an expectation of damage during use,at some point. They would cover that in their tax depresiation and they might even insure their rental boards?? dunno

Did you have insurance as part of the hire? It should be included as "ongoing damage" as you werent negligent just unlucky - as in ran it into a sandbar/flew off the roof of your car etc.

No, I didn't include the insurance option as part of my rental because I normally never break anything (I took the risk and now I'm paying for it), so I wasn't insured at the surf rental place... But I do have another kind of insurance which is for when I accidentally damage or break stuff from other people, and of course I tripped and fell on the board so maybe I could make that work...

value was about $3200 at time- only a couple of months old. My foot slipped off during an attempted backloop , one foot in strap and other knee which was bent went straight into the deck.

maybe hand the board in and say "I'll be back" in a nice Arnie accent and they won't charge you
