Just because I'm at the top of the wave, on the wrong side of the sail.

Trouble with getting old, don't remember being in that situation at all!
(do remember some of the good waves but)
Think it may be where the clew got hit by the lip at the peek of a reo.
Happens to me every now and again with a big sail up, but the sail doesn't normally end up backwinded like that.
Anybody got any theories???

You can't sail Mandurah without getting a few bodily scrapes, cuts and bruises, plus damage to your rig (I trashed 4 rigs in the last 2 months), and board damage, plus the loss of fins.

However, when your ripping those waves apart there is nothing better Not that I've ripped any apart, but plenty have ripped me and my sails apart

As I said, I don't remember being in that situation, if (as I suspect), it's the wave where the lip grabbed the clew, I ended up waterstarting in waist deep water.
Don't forget the telephoto lens effect, I'm probably not as close as it looks.
