Last year I had two weeks off around the end of September and stayed here in Perth. The week before I went on holiday and the week after the wind was howling, during my holidays the air didn't move. So to heighten my chances of wind I was considering to go to Geraldton.
Is it worth giving it a shot?
I am beginner to intermediate (get into footstraps, planing and harness but am working on my waterstarts). So I am only interested in the flat water (I am using a barndoor (Starboard Go) so no use I presume venturing into the waves with that).
Your advice and knowledge would be mighty welcome.

Last 2 weeks of September are still very flukey in Gero, your better off going further north, Shark Bay would be better with flat water, Exmouth even better still, seabreezes are in by then, and lot's of flat water. And Warm!!!

Mmm, I was in Denham in January and I loved the place. Might be an idea. I know that there is a kitsurfing school up there so there must be some wind. Why not, only 400km extra.

Go North Hellema. We head to Exmouth at the beginning of every October. Great winds and something for everyone. Long drive, but after 4 months of winter and cold fronts its worth the trip. Looks like some seabreezes are starting to stir that way already.

Goodness, I started off in Geraldton, moved to Denham and now I am in Exmouth.
It is hard to find any information on windsurfing past Geraldton.
Nothing is mentioned about Denham (except for kite surfing).
Exmouth only mentions Town beach as a launch point for windsurfing.

Hard choice.

Town beach if it is an easterly and you want a sail in the morning. I prefer to go for a surf instead. Then west side to Ningaloo and take your pick of beaches - flat water or waves.

I might go to Denham, see how things are there, then move to Exmouth or back down to Geraldton depending on the wind.
Getting out of town will already be a good thing.

I might be overplanning this (I ended up with a spreadsheet to compare last years observations on daily wind speed and direction in Denham, Geraldton and Learmonth).
Denham came out as the more stable location of the three locations for the last two weeks of September. I'll give that a shot. For the moment anyway, I will most likely change my mind a couple more times. Also my girlfriend has been very quiet about my plans so I am waiting for the big explosion on my solo roadtrip plans. Never a good sign when she goes quiet......

She just returned from 3 weeks in Indo and changed jobs. So no holidays for her. Which gives me two pre-planned weeks of holidays all by myself. So yes, it would be fair that I do with those weeks what I want. But as in most relationships: Everyone is equal but some are more equal than others.

Was in Gero last year around early October and hit a week of really great weather... ...for bloody fishermen! The day before and the morning we left were 30K so I watched the graph and noted only three more days of wind, four without etc. Can be a bit fickle at that time of year.

Cheap shacks at Point Moore in the Quokka for about $50 per day. Coronations north of Gero may be good if you are self sufficient camper. Shops about 15-20km away, so not too bad...

Take a weed fin for Denham. If the wind is up the ribbon type weed can get semi thick. Nice and shallow though! Or even Big Lagoon 3 km inland from town. Denham caravan park is good value put take a decent mallet to get your pegs in.

Maybe Gnaraloo Bay would be getting strong breezes about then? See if you can get in at fisherman's hut for a few days. Should be pretty slow that time of year up there.

Carnarvon rivermouth may be reliable too, though on high tides. Check the charts. Caravan park on the northern shore is 50-100m from launch site. Favoured by teabaggers due its shallowness.

Sandy Bay in the Exmouth national park is awesome, a couple of years ago my wife and I were there early october for a week, could have sailed every day, but we got too tired, needed a rest. Wind came in between 0900 and 1100, used the 5.3 once, mainly on the 4.5 some days the 3.7 came out. Met some people who said the previuous fortnight had been the same.

Thanks for all that information.
I will still give Denham a shot but for next year I might try Exmouth.
Although I might book my holidays at the end of October next year which most likely make Geraldton sailable.

I plan to give my girls (11 and 9.5) windsurf lessons as a Christmas present. If the lessons work and they like windsurfing (fingers crossed), I could take them to Exmouth next year during the October school holidays. Enough other things to do there anyway.

So many plans, hope some of them turn out well.

Update on the trip to Denham. I had a great time up there but not with windsurfing. Two things were against me.
First of all the tide. Only got high tide around 3 to 4 o'clock. As the bay is very shallow you need high tide to get going.
Secondly, lack of wind. Heaps of wind in the morning (during the low tide) but the afternoons were quite flat.
Nevertheless, Denham is a great place to relax. Not much happens there which is just great.
