I was reading www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38826 the other day and after reading comments by Fullmoon and Wayneg I called GIO who insure my house. They told me how much it was going to cost to insure my windsurfing gear whilst in the car and after finding them the cheapest I rang back today only to be told that they don't do windsurfers.

Argh!

I told them I had been quoted and there were a couple of examples of people who had said insurance. Nope... it says no windsurfers...

Can anyone (Fullmoon?) please let me know some more details so i can specifiy to the GIO call centre?

I have my gear Insured through Westpac with their premium contents policy. It's covered anywhere in Australia.

AAMI took windsurfers off the list of things classified in the same category as jet ski's etc. So they now come under their contents insurance. Not sure about the portability of such a policy with std contents insurance you may want to look at specific portables insurance. BTW the easiest insurance company to deal with regarding a household and / or motor vehicle claim. Had thefts from both and fantastic service replacements arrived within the week.

First phone call for the quote was $220. Second call was to sign up - no we don't do windsurfers. Third call not a problem - $85 !! What a classic. Thanks for the input guys, the gear is now covered for the holiday car trip

That's the thing that intrigues me about the insurance industry, no one seems to know what the hell they cover/are doing. Every time you call up you get different damn answers.

I have just recently gone through my insurance booklet with GIO on page 44 of the PDS
"What we cover as your contents Your contents means your furniture, furnishings, unfixed electrical goods, valuables, portable personal possessions,
clothing and unfixed household goods that you own." - etc

"Contents also includes:
– surfboards, sailboards, canoes,
kayaks and non-motorised surf skis "

If it is to insure whilst in your car then that may be another matter.

Am also with GIO for home insurance. Windsurf equipment is classified as contents which is covered when at the home.

It seems that windsurf gear is insured if it's left in an unlocked shed in the back garden but it's not insured if it's locked up in a car in the back garden. Bizarre!

The GIO booklet also states that windsurf gear can't be insured as "portable" (i.e. insured outside the home).

I have insured with GIO and that included all our windsurfing gear.I had to itemise everything I wanted to insure and put a value on all the items.I chose to insure everything over $200.The gear is in a large lock up box, holds 5 boards,11 sails,5 masts etc and the box can only be lifted with a large winch, which allows me to use my ute as a ute.
All my insurance is with GIO and over the years ive had 3 claims which were settled quickly with no problems.
When we are out sailing the keys are locked in the lock up box and the box keys sail with us.It would be easy enough to break into the car but it would be a major job to get into the box.Effectively you would need to steal the car to get the gear.
GIO would have an expensive problem then.
Honestly GIO seem great to work with BUT theyre not the cheapest.
I figured "You get what you pay for"

The Westpac policy does cover your gear anywhere in Australia, whether it's in the car or sitting on the beach at your surf spot. The only place it doesn't cover the gear is while it's in use. It's not cheap, but considering i leave my gear in the car for most of summer it's worthwhile insurance.

I had to make a claim recently for a mast, no problems.
