Hi, i just bought my first short board (second hand) and am very keen to keep progressing. I took it out once and had lots of fun, but i can't get the sail to stretch enough. As hard as i pull it, the battons are still touching the mast and end up being bent a bit. I'm not sure in what sequence should i execute all the rigging steps? My boom is extendable, and so is mast. When i set it up the other day, i was able to sail, and much faster then with my old floater board, but the rig just didn't look right.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi Superlizard!

Congrats on the new board, setting up modern sails is all about downhaul. Here's a good page to get you started:
www.guycribb.com/userfiles/documents/Downhaul%20and%20Outhaul.pdf

Basically the order I do things is this:
1. Put the sail on the mast, and pull a bit of downhaul by hand.
2. Set the boom to the correct length, and clamp it to the mast.
3. Tie a bowline loop in the downhaul rope, thread your harness hook through this loop, sit down facing the mast, put your right foot on the end of the extension, and haul like an olympic rower on the harness spreader bar. The top of the sail should be floppy, and the top few battens should be well clear of the mast.
4. Attach outhaul, adjust to the wind speed, and then attach mast to board.
5. Sail away

The base page for Guy Cribb is here:
www.guycribb.com/page0076v01.htm , lots of good info on this page.

Its not how you rig it, its how you sail it.

Nebian's right as long as you don't have an old dacron sail, useing this technique on that will probably destroy it.

Thanks guys. I'm about to try it out tonight. I also noticed on some pictures that the lower battons are supposed to be poped to one side (hence touching the mast)... it's only the top ones that need to be away and pointing to the centre of the mast... (hope i'm right)..

Drop us a line if you want a free Peter Hart rigging DVD.
It was made for Tushingham sails, but the info is relative to most modern sails.

I made up a downhaul winch from an electric fence reel and pulled the battens on my RAF Gaastra 6.5 clear of the mast hoping to make it more stable in higher wind speeds. Disappointed! It is designed to only have the top two battens clear.
Starting from lowest wind velocity, downhaul only until the bottom battens don't protrude in front of the mast (needing a pump to click them over) and set outhaul a couple of cm negative so that the sail almost touches the side of the boom for maximum power.
