Heading to back home (Sydney) for Jan, Feb, with my wave/freestyle gear. Done a bit of travelling with that gear, so got all the tricks with that sorted.
I was thinking of bringing at least part of a formula set up. Either just the rig and get a second hand board to keep in sydney or bring the board and rig. The rig is 3m, and the board is a recent exocet, I have a good bag for the board. I am flying virgin, so that the excess for weight is not a problem, but I can't find much info on length.
What do other formula sailors recommend when it comes to airline travel?

Length isn't usually a problem. Tell them it's 2.8m, not 3m and they won't know the difference and 2.8 usually doesn't ring as many alarm bells.
The only problem is with the A-380's. Depending on the configuration, they often put the luggage in to these big metal containers which can sometimes be less than 2.6m wide, so it simply won't fit.
Other than that, I haven't had any problems with length on nearly any airline I've flown around the world.

If you do the FW Oceanic's, then we can organise to rent you a board.
