Now that my hoped for relocation to Perth is not going ahead I'm going to have to make do with windsurfing holidays. I'm going to Wellington over Xmas to visit the GF's rellos. They happen to live very near the water and will loan us a car with roofracks for our stay. Of course it's very windy in Wellington.

I've heard there's no places to hire kit in Wellintgton so am looking at taking a board and two sails etc with me. I've had a look at the QANTAS website and am unsure whether they'll take my gear or not when we fly.

Has anyone ever taken gear to NZ or been able to take gear with them when on holiday without any major dramas? Any advice would be appreciated. Recomended airline?

As long as nothing in your kit is over 2.5m Air New Zealand are Great.

They will also allow you an extra 10kilo's before charging you for excess weight.

Get GF to check in one of your bags as hers (don't pack it full of weed though) and thats an extra 20Kgs free

I had no trouble flying to FIJI with AirNZ with my board. Check-in was simple just get there early!

I am flying to Welli from AK tomorrow. It is not quite the same but virgin have given me one bag of any weight (I will keep it under 35kg) at the cost of 5kg from my general luggage limit. That is even better than Air NZ. Who gave me a mere 10kg extra last time I flew... HAHAHA Oh also try to time your travels so that you are in welli for the last round of the wellington freewave. Well worth it if you are into freestyle or wave sailing.

Im flying from nz to brisbane this week on pacific blue and they are really easy.
For sports equipment they class each piece as 5kg of your allowance. For example if you take 2 bags of windsurf gear (under 32kg each) then that is 10kg off your 20kg limit so you can still take 10kg of clothes ect in another bag.
