So, in trying to better gybes and improve my alpha speeds I find I'm getting delayed on the exit by struggling to get hooked back in. I realised yesterday that I always end up looking down at the harness line. I wonder whether others do this or have you trained yourselves to hook back in without looking? is it even possible?

Edit: I tried asking Klink over here on the left but he doesn't know...

I use a waist harness and stiff lines which almost sit in the hook in position. In fact a couple of times ive hooked in accidentally coming into a jibe, not a good look!

So no need to look for me.

That is a pretty good question, but the harness lines should just be there. It you don't get them the first time you can just have another swing or two at them.

Here is a good tip for faster gybes;

Try to reduce or eliminate that uncertain period between leaving your "go fast" sailing stance, and entering the gybe. That bit where you unhook, stand up, pull out your back foot and kinda bounce along for a second or two or three before you are ready to really commit. This is an unstable and dangerous period, and you are slowing down.

If you can unhook, pull your back foot out and dive straight into the gybe in one smooth motion all the way to the exit, then you have nailed it.

you know how when you're just staring to plane (e.g. hitting that first gust from a beach start) a tiny inward swing of the hips and small 'row' of the boom hooks you in without looking down?

that's because your feet, hands and hips are all in the right position. and you know the stance very well because you've employed it countless times - it's how you get planning into the harness every time you sail, and you learn it long before you can gybe.

i suggest you aim for that exact same stance immediately following the foot change and rig flip on a gybe. then hooking in is very natural and easy to do. it's actually quite easy to do, especially in flatter water - but the real trick is doing it in as fewer steps and as fluidly as possible to maintain trim and speed.

I used to accelerate out of the gybe,
Front strap, back strap, Then hook in once i'm fully powered up.

im not even that fast at gybing and i never look but you need stiff lines so they dont blow back and wobble around every where , normally adjustable ones are alot stiffer .
