Upthere said...The comps at the end of the year so I'm just trying to plan it all now.

This is so i don't have gear floating around the country cause some of it won't get on the flight. I have heard far to many horror stories from Sean Obrien.
Just a quick question i have also heard that there is a restriction on the size of gear is this true

.
Qantas have info on their website that talks about windsurfing gear as not being able to be taken as the masts are too long, which obviously refers to really old equipment when the masts were one piece. I went to the trouble of calling the baggage people at the airport to see if this was going to be a problem. I spoke to the Qantas 'baggage master' who told me it was no problem.
I have travelled with Qantas from Sydney to Perth and back and had no problems.
Recently when trying to get back from Mackay to Sydney I looked at the flights out from Qantas and some were Jetstar and the others Qantas Link. Jetstar have a 2m maximum length limit and from what I have heard charge a fair bit for excess. I called Qantas about Qantas Link flights and they can't carry windsurfing gear (smaller planes!), and I think the limit was also 2m. I ended up going back on VB, who were very nice and didn't charge me anything although they could have.
I have carried a 2.7m board on Qantas and VB with no problem.
I suspect Sean's stories would probably refer to international travel as I think there will be a lot more restrictions and problems with transfers between different carriers.
If you really want to make sure and have the time, call the baggage depart at your airport and see what they say.
It's funny how at check in, when you get someone that doesn't understand what a windsurf board is that you can easily describe it as a large surfboard and they seem to be happy with that answer.
