Mate, I hade one of them bad days today. Went to the local, N/E blowing all was looking good. Rigged up found myself a nice little area to get out through the surf. Then the wind dropped. I thought as you do bugga it Ill go out anyway. 1st wave break fine, second break smashed me. Normally not an issue. But today I was in a rip and over a reef and getting hammered. Rip was taking me out, wind and breaking waves keeping me in the bugga me I’m gonna get hammered again zone. It was like bloody groundhog day.
Should have stayed at home and got the wife to hose me and hit me with a cricket bat a few times. At least I could have had a beer during the bashing.
Struth, gotta love it. Hope the winds up tomorrow.

Grasshopper,

I admire you guys. I've been in the surf once - I've snapped my boom once. Never been game to go back. Any secret what to do when your getting rolled with your gear in the break? Or do you just wait 'til everythings washed up and start again?

Harrow.

BTW, I sail like a paraplegic chook in the surf. Just get out and give it a go. Tha way I see it, If I don't come home dead or broken I'm doing OK

The main thing, is to keep the mast pointing at the waves and as far underwater as you can get it. I try and stand on the mast to push it under, then hang on to boom with one hand and back strap with the other. There's a good chance the waves will just go over the top of you. when the set finishes, or you're washed far enough in, then waterstart.
If the mast is pointing towards shore, the wave can drive it to the bottom and snap it!
