If so what sort of stuff is covered? I'm looking to buy new now but how do you know the mast you buy from the shop hasn't been dropped and will break as a result?

If it's not broken from misuse or not having the two halves fully together you should be covered. I had a Naish mast replaced under warranty this year when it broke a few inches above the boom just sailing along. Took bloody ages but better than buying another one.

sboard,
you normally get 12mnths warranty, no shore break.
If you want to get Ezzy RDM's as you suggested in the other thread, and use them for freeride, you will not break them.
About 5 yrs ago I had SDM's and broke minimum a mast each summer, sometimes two. I bought Ezzy RDM's and used them for 3 seasons in nasty nasty waves with plenty of big stuffups. They are now on second owner and still going great.

Someone told me yesterday that their son was a sponsored sailor & went through about 18 ( ?) masts in a few months learning forward loops & then swapped to an ezzy RDM & has had it for 8 years!
