Don't no why you got a red thumb for that question, some people are weird.

A qualified yes is my answer.
Helps if you're also handy with a grinder/sander to trim it up afterwards.
And 18' is big enough so you can still get upwind without spinning out.
Also when you hit a rock, it does less damage if the impact point is at an angle, means the board tends to ride over the rock instead of coming to a dead stop.
So in front of your cut round the fin off in a nice sweep.

At Mandurah we've been doing extensive fin mods for years, making them smaller to go faster, and changing their angles so they don't pick up weed.

so you can cut it it linish a radius onto the front surface
The reason is ask this is i have seen it done and i have a few fins that have bad reef dings in them they seem to cause cavitation (especially when going up wind) i seem to loose rail. With the extensive damage to the fin it would be impossible to remove the burrs unless it was "hacked in half"
I have nothing to loose by trying to cut the fins down and reshape them i know it works cause i have seen people using them modified fins.
They dont look like the dogs bollocks but if it saves me going to a shop and purchasing new ones i feel as if im ahead.

Fixing fin dings is easy, grind one side down to fin center line at leading edge, tapering the grind off to the sides and rear.
Fill grind out with fiber glass, grind out other side, then fiber glass that.
Then sand fiber glass back to foil shape.
You can completely reshape a fin using this method.

problem is a was running rrd and starboard on big wind sails 6.0+ they had like double bolt turtle fin I had an old 130 mistral with a single finbox bolt . got a taubou and dosent accommodate my rrd fins or starboard fin. I have a collection of fins for f2 wave type highwind style box The tabou is a good board but im not sure if i want to get a complete new style of fins for it all my high wind broads 70+litre run wave style .
Its just getting to the stage where i dont want to spend money on a new set of specialized finz to accommodate the new board (my own fault for not doing the research). the old mistral fin attaches to the tabou i just wanted to cut down the old mistral (single bolt) to accommodate the tabou
I have been using the 36'on the tabou (run 18 max now ) but is ripping my boom grip to peices and it handles like a tank

They should standardize fin boxes, Hey what finboxes do jp run mineral. Is a finbox specific to a type of board or a type of brand?

They pretty much have, trimbox and the funny euro ones have all gone.

Basically it will be Tuttle on freeride and race stuff, powerbox on FSW/ freestyle and some smaller freerides, and US box on waveboards.

While on the cutting topic.
I just bought a battered 2005/2006 JP FSW 98 (nose cut off - so probably 96L).

I was thinking of cutting down this fin to suit the Pinnaroo chop, and the high wind days on the river.

Any advice on where to cut, and how (straight, angled, curved...)
It's a JP Seaweed 33cm.
