Hi All,
I've got a 520 mast which was I was doing nothing with until I purchased an 8.5 sail today which needs a 510 luff. What is the better option - rig it on the 520 mast and have a fair bit of down-haul showing, or can I cut 10cm off the bottom of the mast? I don't need the mast for any other sail. It's a high carbon mast (90 or 100%) and I'm prepared to risk it as I have another 520 mast that's much newer and in much better nick as a fallback (I won't be attempting to cut that one down if the first one fails).
Any thoughts or ideas as to which option is better, or how to go about cutting 10cm without damaging the mast?
Cheers...Eckas.

I did the same for my 8.5 but kept it to about 7cm's. I cut from the top of the mast rather than the bottom, this way it does not affect any reinforcing the mast may have- normally at the boom and base area. There was not a big difference in taper with my mast so it worked for me. I have since used this mast and it works fine.
