Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could please help me with choosing a suitable mast for my Gaastra Matrix 6.5 2007 model sail. Although it is 2007 it has never been used (long story) and so we need a new mast that will suit it. The recommendations printed on the sail are: IMCS 25, mast 460, luff 466, base 6. However, I don't know whether it needs a constant curve mast or a progressive curve mast? I tried putting a progressive curve Neil Pryde X3 460 mast (ICMS 25, carbon content 30%) into the sail but when I rigged it with this mast (trying different levels of downhall and outhall) the batons kept projecting behind the mast. Would this be because the sail requires a constant curve mast? Or would this just be corrected once the sail and batons actually get some wind in them and are stretched out a bit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Mark

i have a Gaastra and a NP too and both are very mast specific they want their own masts if possible according to a friend..someone might be able to explain further
anyways the bend of the NP is so different from the Gaastra so best to get it's own mast if possible..regards

Gaastra masts of 2007 or earlier, as well as Maui Sails masts should work well.

That sail needs a 'stiff top' mast, it's explained a bit better here:

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice and replying so quickly. I've managed to rig it alright on the NP but haven't as yet had a good sail on it since the mast base broke the first time I used it :s. Just normal wear and tear I think. I've replaced the broken rubber part with a new one so looking forward to getting some sailing done on it. As I'm a beginner I don't think I will notice the dif in performance too much and as I already kind of had the NP mast I think I'm going to stick with it.
Thanks again,

Mark

Try a Gaastra Ignition 75% (yellow sticker). A cheaper alternative would be the Gaastra 55% (green sticker). These will work a lot better than the NP mast. Each brand sets better on its own designed masts.
Fiberspar or Maui Sails will work fine too.
