10yr old Alex Halank will be awarded the Canberra Sporting and Business Legends Award for becoming a Windsurfing World Champion at such an early age. Congratulations from the Australian windsurfing community.

Awesome, hot dog, unreal! Well done Alex, looks fantastic. It's quite amazing how many great windsurfers come out of Canberra, what's going on? From personal experience way better for kids to be doing this than hanging around Woden Interchange (if it's still there). And great to see Akim still ripping.

Because of the surrounding topography, the winds on Lake Burley Griffin are often gusty and shifty in their direction (much like our politicians?). Sailors here have to be attuned to this. Yes, there have been a number of Australian sailing champions to come from Canberra (eg Dave Pitchford).

Alex's success is due to his environment, his dedication and focus, and the support he gets from his family. Alex's dad (Akim) is fanatical about the sport.

Congratulations; well deserved.

Well done Alex. Canberra isn't such a bad place. You learn not to waste so much as a puff of wind.

Well done Alex.

You sight a number of people as inspirational to you, well let me say that I am sure you serve as inspiration to many of them also. Speaking for myself, I do hope my 3 year old son follows your path into windsurfing. I am sure in years to come, if he does do this, he will be looking up to you as a champion of the sport.

Well done mate.

Akim, I'm sure you are extremely proud. Will try to catch up next time I am down south.

Thank you all very much! Alex read all the comments and he asked me to say a big thank you to everyone too. He is a little overwhelmed at getting the award and he has been asked for interviews by the local ABC radio and local papers. They keep asking him what his goals are and so he's had the opportunity to tell them that he would like to go to the Olympics and hopes that windsurfing will be reinstated... He is happy that the MP is coming to assembly to present him with his award because most of the kids at school don't believe him when he's told them about his achievements at the Worlds.

From my point of view, the best thing is if more kids become interested in learning to windsurf. It's too selfish not to share it. We have such a great community in windsurfing where people really do still look out for each other. We just need to keep encouraging it. It's part of what makes windsurfing better than other sports.

And would love to catch up Jamie but you'll have to come a little further east as well as south - we have just decided to move to St Georges Basin and we're in the middle of buying a house which settles in a month. Exciting times ahead - we'll have access to waves, speed and freestyle locations close by and be able to do a lot more windsurfing!

Hey Akim, good news about the move, will certainly get you guys on the water more often.

We will be passing through mid November on the annual pilgrimage to Merimbula. Probably stay a few days each side of the Corona around Gerroa as per previous years.

Seriously Jonathan - just like regular kids - they are 10 for a year ;)

Birthday coming up though - he'll be 11 on Tuesday (just for one year)! He was born on 911 (yep that day!)
