Yeah I have a few 3 piece masts too

No Billy, you can't cover 4.0 - 8.0 with one mast.
I have 4.2 to 6.1 with two masts, and the 4.2 is not quite ideal on my 400, really should have a 370. So to be withing manufacurers spec, you will need about 4 masts, maybe get away with 3.

Get a pencil and try to bend it. You can't. Now go to the hardware and pick up a 2m length of dowelling the same diameter. Floppy as hell.
Thats why you can't have a mast with the same properties when it is extended lots, it simply won't work.

Yeah, I've had plenty of three piece masts, they didn't start off that way though

I think you'll be pushing it, a base that works well on a 4mt sail will be too soft on an 8mt.
Used to have a good 460 base that worked well on 5.0, 5.5, 5.8, 6.5 but was way too soft on a 7.2 and too stiff on a 4.5. You may get away with 2 masts if you don't mind big compromises in performance.

MD74 has a 4 piece one from what i hear. I'm sure he will sell it to you.
On a serious note though i have sails from 4.2 to 6.7 and i have a 370, 400 and a 430 to cover them. If i was to go any bigger in sail size, which i'm not, i would have to get a 460. The price of X3 level or equivalent in the brand to suit your sails really isn't that expensive. If you want your sails to feel right just save up and buy the right size masts otherwise your rig is just going to feel crap and aren't you doing this sport because it feels good and for enjoyment. We don't get to sail often enough as it is so why make it feel crappy when you do.

I think North did a 3 piece mast, you only used 2 bits at a time but I think it had 2 different length top sections that you could choose. You can also get mast extenders that with give you a bit of extra length. Ultimately you will need at least 2 masts, if not 3 or 4 to maintain maximum performance. I use 370, 400, 430 and 460, this covers all my sailing from 35 knots with a 4.7 to 12 knots with an 8.5. I can get away with a 400 and 430, windsurfing is an accessory sport and if you have the spare coin you can have the right bit of gear for every occasion but sometimes you need to compromise.

If you don't have spare coin I'd recommend spending money on the gear that is used most. Once you are up and planing I recommend getting a 460 mast and a sail around 7 meters to 7 and a half. This sized sail will maximise the time you are planing in winds we usually get here of around 15 knots, plus or minus 5 knots.

Billyboy402 I think you wrote before you want to get into the waves. Having a bigger sail will still be of benefit as you would be wise to spend time sailing on flat water before getting into the waves. To wavesail you need to be able to gybe reasonably well and to recover from falls and get back sailing quickly through waterstarting.

A bigger sail will allow you to improve quicker. A good thing about living in NSW is smaller sails and boards are not used all that much due to the lightish winds here, so when you are ready for smaller gear in stronger winds you can find a fair supply of second hand gear for reasonable prices.

In the end if you want to have a full quiver you'll need 4 masts, however most windsurfers generally have one main mast, either a 460cm or 430cm one, depending if they are light wind or strong wind oriented. I almost always use a 460cm mast.

Billy, I run 400 and 430 sailworks masts and that covers a 4.2, 4.6, 5.2 and 5.8m sails. If the forecast is true tomorrow, I plan to hit Toowon Bay near The Entrance if you want to see the different set-ups and give you a run down. Look for the sailworks sail.

you'll find that a lot of the sail manufacturers have gone to shorter masts in the last few years.

So you can pick a brand and put together a quiver using their older sail range and new. When I say older, I dont mean antiques, they're still good modern design.

As an exaple you can get an older 5.2m with a newer 5.8 & 6.7 which will all fit on 430. This will cover you for a good range of conditions. When you build your skill level you can then buy a 7.5m and bigger mast for the light days.

You are better off investing in a good range of sails (ie. modern designs used $200-$300), they'll make your windsurfing easier andf more enjoyable.

Yea some thing like that Would it be better ,

With 1+2 piece do U get 400 and with 1+3 piece do u get 460
Then with my 35 ext it could cover me 400 to 460

X3 that 30% carbon right .

Not to worried about weight ( still learning , more about $ )

Is there any benefit of carbon other then the 1 kg different , do they fle more

Guess there just as strong , they just use less material and make it lighter
