I would like to try out sailing at Safety Bay but I don't have a weed fin.
Do you need one there at present?
What happens if you sail with a normal fin when there is weed about?

No, you will realy realy struggle down there "WITHOUT" one. Its stringy stuff and sticks like @#** to a blanket on your fins.

Thanks.
Better to find out without trying it out.

I guess the next question is since I need to buy a weed fin what do I need to know about them? I am pretty ignorant about fins in general.
I sail a bic 270 board and my sails are 4.5 - 6.2

What is your weight, and what type of box does the Bic use?

The other option is to go into a local Perth shop like 2nd wind or windsurfing Perth and ask them what you should use. At least that way you can blame them if its not exactly right!

Oh yeah, what volume is a Bic 270?

You're asking a lady how much she weighs?!!!

OK, 58kg
Board 95 l volume
Bic have their own finbox design don't they?

I like to get some background info before I go down to the shop. I don't like to sound like a complete ignoramus.

Windtaxi,

As has been said it is impossible to sail at safety bay without a weedfin.
A non weed fin collects the strands of weed up where the fin meets the board and after a minute or two there is so much weed there the in doesnt work.

You should be able to get a weed fin for your bic in any of the shops.
Just take your board in to one of them (2nd wind, windsurfing perth etc) and they'll tell you what size you need ( i'm guessing arond 23.5cm).
When you go sailing there make sure you know where the sand banks are, you dont want to snap your nice new fin off.

A lady? Shhh.. don't tell the board that.

I looked at a picture of a Bic Vivace 270 via google and it looks like it uses a trimbox. There are probably multiple screw holes in the fin and a single screw that holds the fin to the board. There are probably also slidable spacers in the board that lets you change the position of the fin in the board slightly.

It it is a trimbox check out windsurfing Perth as I have seen trimbox fins there before. Just don't take too much money in case they try and get you to buy a new board Take the board with you or at least the existing fin to make sure you are on the right track.

Don't worry about not knowing much about fins, that's what the shops are there for.

Thanks.
I know it's an old board, but it's a goodie and goes so fast it scares me sometimes.
I know it's old because when I take it down to the beach all these 50+ year old guys rush up to me and exclaim "a Bic Vivace, gee that takes me back, I used to ride one of those..."
It's like I turned up in an FJ Holden or something...
It's a bit embarassing actually... what is really embarrassing is that is was nearly new when I got it...

There's an idea... I could get an FJ with roofracks to go with the board!

Then again, it would be cheaper to get a new board...

I have a weed fin for a Bic Vivace 270 if you want to borrow it.

Its actually attached to a Bic Vivace 270 that I bought in 1994.
The board is like new!

That would be about when I bought mine.
Do you not use your Vivace or has is just aged well?

I think borrowing your fin before investing in one sounds like a great idea. How shall we organise this?
I was thinking the windsurfing shop in Safety Bay would do well to run a weed fin hire service - maybe they do ?

We have a range of weed fins you buy, from our shop in Safety Bay. Feel free to come down and we'll have a chat about what fin you need.

Do you have a second sense which tells you to post when anyone has mentioned your shop?

I was thinking a fin hire would be good because if someone is only in the area for a few days, or is just trying out Safety Bay, they don't want to buy a weed fin straight out, they'd like to hire one and try it out first. You could require a decent deposit to make sure you get them back...

I got away for years without using a weed fin at SB, but when I did get one you never look back! It does depend on what part of the season and seagrass beds are doing, some years not as bad.

Length of dagger will be longer than what you have now, as the rake will be proportional to height (or something like that).

You can get away without a weed fin at times. However, at the moment the weed is really bad so you definately need one. Also, don't forget your teabag shield while your at it.

Do I dare ask? What is a teabag shield?

I don't know if there's an effective tea-bag shield known to man, but I think if you got someone you know to grab a camera and go to the western side of the western sand bar it might keep them away for a while. They seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to cameras

It was a bit surprising to read something in the kite forum the other day whinging about how windsurfers sit or stand around in the middle of 'the pond'. Since when has 'the pond' been just the shallow bit where the kiters go?
