Hey guys,

We here in Canberra are trying to get a windsurfing club up and running, To get an idea if it would be possible we have started a web site to see if there would be enough of an interest. I know there is a lot of sailors in Canberra and there once was a strong following, Now is the time for us to come together again. So if you frequent the lakes of the ACT, have a think about joining the web site and then we'll see where we can take it from there. Or maybe your an ex-patriot of Canberra and just want to have a look for nostalgic reason, our maybe there's someone you want to catch up with, Why not check it out as well. If anyone has some stories or pictures from back in the day I would be interested in posting them on the page.

If anyone out there has some tips on starting a club from the ground up I'd appreciate any help we could get. Things like who do we need to be registered with, how we go about insurance, what other legal hurdles do we face and what sort of a financial situation we need to be in?

Any feedback would be appreciated....Jase.

Since it's Canberra, you could call it "The Polly Waffles"

Lots of different options available.

Sports clubs can incorporate, or remain unincorporated.

I used to sit on a board for a few non profit orgs which were incorporated, and had government reporting requirements that went along with that, however incorporating did have benefits. I also used to audit the books of a canoe club in QLD, and its a fairly basic operation to run - they were incorporated and had someone's non working wife run the basic books for members fees and expenses.

The steps to set up a club are fairly straight forward, I found this and it may help:

One thing worth considering is what level of risk there could be financially to you and your members under different entity structures, and what reporting requirements you may also have under those entities.

Depending on how high or low key you want to run it, you could also look at gov grants and sponsorship from businesses, or keep it nice and grass roots with mates.

Once setup and running its pretty easy gig to run, and a lot of fun.

Good luck with it!

Kurt

No worries. Also check out free legal aid places - they usually have lawyers and accountants who can help you with structure advice.

Some accountants and lawyers might even do some probono work to set you up.

Don't ask, don't get

Jason, you should get in touch with the Australian Windsurfing Association. They pretty much exist to coordinate the sport across the country and also provide insurance to member clubs.

Perhaps your club could fall under Windsurfing NSW? www.windsurfingnsw.com/

the AWA website is www.windsurfing.org/

good luck, being part of a great windsurfing club is a fantastic experience!
