I'm chasing a new boom and curious if anyone has bought online, in Oz or overseas (US) and managed to save $$. Cheapest I can get a boom in WA is $280, similar boom s in the US are retailing for $150! But the US websites I found don't ship to Oz...

I bought a whole new quiver (3 sails+mast) online/overseas in the past month. Was about 40% cheaper (thats including postage) than local, and it arrived in less then a week, 4 days actually.

I'm not sure its worth it for a small cheaper item such as a boom thou? are you really going to save much?

For a Boom (esp.) - try buy Local - helps with the warranty claims you may or maynot have.

Depends on what you're looking for in a boom. Surf Sail Aust have monocoque alloy slalom booms a bit cheaper for $259. I purchased one recently and they look like they're very well made:

Also KA sails, masts and booms can be purchased at a discounted price online (though probably not 40% off full retail price!):

I bought a hypersonic carbon wave boom last month for $500 delivered from Stuart Bell Sails in WA and they have an online ordering system. I have already got one of these booms and have used it for several seasons and really happy with it and you can get spare parts if you need them.

I'd give up at least 5% for doing business in Oz. Customs and shipment are easier to settle, plus more understanding people to talk to.

I bought some online gear as i wanted to see if it was worth saving a few bucks. Just a set of harness lines. They took 3 weeks to arrive and broke after 10mins sailing (Dakine - true story). I have given up with the replacement effort as it is too hard.
Bottom line is that i believe it is just not worth it...deal with a local retailer who gives you service....(I know this is not very helpful if you don't have a local retailer).

I have to agree strongly with Brett.
Unless you live a long way from a shop, you are far better off buying from your local.
Service and support are core to a small business, they can't afford to throw repeat business away. You are buying more than just a product when shopping at your local, it's the warranty, support and local advice that is worth more than $$$. Over time you may even get to try gear and get loaners if problem arise that take more than an hour or two to fix.
If you are cynical enough to believe that they are only in it for the money, then try it for yourself. Over 50% of all small businesses go broke in the first 12 months. If you have been around for a few years, you can't be just profit motivated.

I see I got a few red thumbs, I feel like mark haha. I'm all for supporting local, so I suppose I should shed some light on my reasoning not too in this circumstance. Basically I was shopping for a new quiver of sails.. ideally 4.2 4.7 5.3 5.9, thou in the end I went for 4.5 5.3 5.9 cause the small sails would be used extremely rarely. So the reasons.

1. Price, pretty obvious.
2. No local retailers of the sails I wanted, it's pretty boring on the water with everyone on the same gear, good to get some different colours out there.
3. Suitability, I bought a powerex 430 RDM last year (locally), and found that it didn't suit my existing quiver of sails, North Duke and Naish Force. So if I was to get a new quiver of norths or naishs I would also have to replace my existing mast.

End of the day, I'm a uni student, I have a decent job so not as broke as some, but I can't afford an extra $2000 just to support a local retailer.

There are some other reasons as well, but this is hardly the place.

As far as service goes mine was completely the opposite of Bretts, not only are the sails probably better built and performing then anything else on the water in my opinion, but as far as the retail experience went, the response time on emails was less then a day and I had my sails dispatched on the day, and at my door within 4. And the advice, well the guy actually wavesails and I've heard from reliable sources that he rips , so I'm pretty sure I'm in good hands.

Makes me feel a little warm and fuzzy inside buying local, but my wallet can't stand for that kind of abuse.

Agree with what Swoosh says.

There are major advantages with support when buying local. BUT - I have gone into well established WS shops where none of the staff know anything about the technical aspects of the sails and masts, and seriously what are your chances of emailing the designer to ask a tech question?

With this company Swoosh used you can email the sail designer and have a reply in hours.
You can ask for a rigging tip, or will your sail work on Mast brandX and they will reply.
When I bought off them a few years back they emailed all their customers and told then there was a very minor oversight in some of that years sails. If you wanted to take your sails to a local repairer to get a piece of stickyback added and one line of stitching in it, they would pay.

So buying local is great, but buying direct from the manufacturer and establishing a relationship with them and saving money is better

Hi Z.
You must have missed calling us, for we do have (waranteed) booms starting at $213, and we are in Perth! ! don't like selling the cheaper ones as the pleasure gained from lesser price is usually soured by the displeasure of a lesser quality. Feedback from most of our customers regarding cheapo booms is; once bitten, twice shy.......

When it comes to mail order, most shops will do a fair price for freighting new gear.
2ndwind sends a lot of items around Oz,some items (new boards & sails) may go for free.
When you're buying on the internet, check around with the shops for the SAME items.
You probably will come fairly close $$$!
What I always recomend is that you phone the shop... speak to someone who knows.
Even if you're in Woopwoop and can't use the direct benefits a regular shop customer gets (demos, uj repairs, batton removal, loans, advice.....) you can still build a relationship with the shop, with its associated benefits.

Cheers Jez
