Thats bad luck Geoff, maybe a factory fault
Might be sorry I say this but I have 3 X6 masts for quite a few years and they have been great. Prob time I changed the 460, quite old now.

That sucks. I'm really worried that one day someone gets in serious trouble from a broken mast.
I have had a few 520cmX6 masts and never had a breakage.

My 460 X6 mast is about 3 years old and its still fine. Based on readings here they don't seem to have a reputation for fragility.

same here... have multiple X6 RDM and SDM masts and no breakage yet...

That said, a few years back I had 3 X7 masts that all broke within 10 minutes of rigging up. To Neil Pryde's credit they acknowledged that there had been a production issue and I was refunded for all masts no problem.

I am guessing this could have been a production fault that wasn't picked up by final quality check. Still, not very helpful when you are 5k out to sea...

Yep, broke a brand new 370 x6 last week. Only used 2 or 3 times and broke a foot above the joint when a knee high wave rolled over it. Was changed on a warranty but still a bit concerning......

Yep, broke 2 both 4.0. first one snapped same place as yours at 8 months old and put it down to abuse in surf. second one snapped same place at 2months old and only chop hop sailing. don't use x6 any more. Disapointing as its the only problem I've had with NP gear in 20 years of using it.

I broke 3 X6's within 12 months (about 2005-06 era), 1 was stupidity sure enough but the other two had clear manufacturing defects. To NP's credit the warrantied them no problems but I never bought a NP mast again.

I broke a reasonably new X3 a few years ago, was replaced under warranty with an X6 (I paid the diff)...a couple of years later I snapped it. Since then I've also snapped a KA & Gaastra RDM, so guessing that I can't blame any particular brand?!

Just broke the 400 this Arvo, interestingly it is in exactly the same place as the 370 about a foot above the joint. Why would that be?

Sounds like it could be point loading from the extension. Underload the ext. could possibly touch the mast then "snappo".Might be worth measuring the distances of both the ext. and the snap point, also the diameter of youre extension. Interesting!!!!

is it a SDM? there are soooo many x3 / x6 SDM owned locally, surely someone must have broken one

Sorry, just to confirm. Both the 370 and 400 are two piece brand new rdm x6 and both the top sections broke about 500mm above the join and were only used a handful of times and broke within a couple of weeks of each other. Seems strange ?

No problems with service as the store and NP have been great with replacement. My issue is with swimming in 800m at Point Moore and having gear i cant rely on.

You're absolutely right about that.
