Which way do you put your w'surfing board on roof racks?

Straps up?
Straps down?
facing fwd? ..better aero dynamics for higher speed if nose down?
facing aft? ..low speed only?

I drive 'round with a Formula board on the roof normally. I have straps down, so the racks will only damage the deck and tail first and I have as little board hanging over the windscreen as I can after I had a set of racks rip off many years ago because of the deflection of wind up the window onto the flat surface of the board overhang.

Nose forward deck down - no real reason except seems to fit better - other wise the nose rocker hits the roof - my racks are really low.
If for some reason it end up hull down (lazy) then tail forward.

backwards facing, straps up....so the nose curve will offer the much needed wind spoiler effect for my high performance postman pat van.

wineman, Rola roof racks with the four soft flexible saddles (canoe type) to take the board
Straps down facing forward.
Regular checks on retainers for racks so I don’t get any nasty surprises.

Straps up, facing backwards... so the nose rocker allows the rear hatch to lift higher when you stop to check you haven't forgotten anything

Back in the 80's BMW or Mercedes did a wind tunnel test and most efficient way was Boards stacked ontop of each other rather than side by side and footstraps facing down and nose of board to rear of the car.

Always straps down, nose forward.
On my Commodore wagon I have the racks as far apart as I can. No problem lifting tailgate, bloody long car.
We carried 3 boards this way on Maui doing 30-40 mph into 20-30 knot trades and the roof stayed on. We did have an extra tie down over the boards and through the windows to make sure roof stayed on.

My gf sailes as well.So four boards on the roof ,straps ,down two high ,side by side ,nose first and a strap over the lot and through the door frames . I don't trust any roof racks after my mates surfboard plus roof racks came through my windcreen one day a few years back and that was only a 5.6 surfboard on it's own.

Straps up. I have really sharp edges that would be crushed otherwise.

Back in the 70's when I was a grommet. We were travelling down the south coast somewhere around Sussex Inlet. We where travelling in a ute there was 3 abreast in the front and 3 of us in the back tray - done thing those days - and 6 boards on the racks. Travelling around 70mph (120kph or so). Just enjoying the day after surfing all day - Wind blowing through the hair (yes I had hair thoses days) matted by the wind and salt, next thing I remebered was waking up tangle up with the 6 boards, still strapped to the racks in the back tray. Other than sore heads and a bit on concussion no real damage, well maybe a little memory retention, lucky escape I say. For me never more than a 2 board stack.

Depends on how many board we carry. Usually its four so we have the two bigger boards facing backwards straps down and then the two smaller boards on top, also backwards but with straps facing upwards. If its only one or two we just have them facing backwards with straps up.

hmm it seem everyone has it there own way , i put mine straps up facing forward , with a tiny pit poking over the windscreen , so i can check if its still there . i use 2 soft racks , and i put one of the over straps in-between the foot straps incase it slides around.

I have a commodore wagon and everything fits in there nicely

I knew of one person who went nose forward and down creating a wing airfoil. Low air pressure on top formed by faster moving air over a greater cambered surface than the bottom, generated enough lift to separate his racks from the car.
I go straps up and forward.

Straps up, tail right and nose left(so it dont get smacked by passing trafic, other way round when in USA etc). The wind flow over the edge of the board (i call it my 'airfoil') takes advantage of the Bernoulli effect, lestening the weight of my vehicle and increasing fuel efficiency for those long sailing road trips. As a side effect it also helps my car do bigger jumps-wicked.

Should be rejoicing that the whole family goes down to the venue - its worth the inconveniance - no matter what I do/say I can't talk my family into it. I would have much more sailing time and less greif if the tribe came down to the beach instead of wanting to go window shopping at the mall.

The issue with straps up, nose forward is having the board(s) lifting the rack off the vehicle.

I myself like straps down nose forward (I'm most concerned with damaging the bottom of the board) though nose backwards works too, as does straps up nose back.
