I've got a JP Funster 145 that has a soft deck surface to it. I've been using it to teach young ones and missus on. I had a go on it the other day and found the deck was really slippery. I don't remember it being that slippery when i started on it but I've been using boards with that sand paper like surface for the last six months and maybe the Funster was always like that?

If not, is there a way to improve the grip on this surface again or is it just wearing out?

Brush with soft soap and clear water and rinse well. If not enough, use GENTLY a LIGHT sand paper on it. That what I do for my boom grip and it usually works.
