This question has me kinda confused which is not hard.
Leech, Miller and I were talking about if you werent planing or under powered, would you increase board volume, or sail size to get going?
A mate told me a few years ago that increasing sail size would be the thing to do. I can kinda see this theory?
Increasing sail area would give you more wind power without changing board size?
More board volume means more weight and maybe even more wet surface area and even not as quick to plane?
What are your thoughts on this fellas?
Bigger board or bigger sail?

Well a bigger sail gives you more power, but becomes problematic in waves, I just didn't wanna take my 6.9 into the big surf recently.

A wider board (hull) needs less speed to plane (Laws of physics).

Have you guys thought of the Exocet Kona, which is designed for sub-planing wavesailing?

I tend to start with a larger board with a full sail then change down boards and increase the downhaul and outhaul. It's a lot easier than changing rigs and if the wind then drops just plug the big board back on. Only when I'm over powered on a small board I change down sails.

they would both work i would think, bigger board, more boyant, (cant spell i know) bigger sail more power,

i do both though, i go out on a 4.2 and 69ltr cant get going without working it, and i go in change to a 85ltr, and i get plaining no worries, get jumps plain out and anything els.

but when i cant be botherd setting up A BOARD and setting the fin, i just change sail size up by .5 and it just makes a huge difference,

but another thing that could work is just putting a longer and bigger fin on, more lift, and you will be able to work the fin better

Setting up a new sail over another board. I always find it easier to set up another board rather than rigging another sail.

I usually change sails over board though and i sort of know which sails work best with each board so when i get to like a 7.0 i change from 85 or 105 liters to a 115L board or something. When i know it's really light i just rig the biggest sail (7.0) and put it on my dads 160L freeride board.

Because i sail usually with my dad and sometimes my brother we usually work it out together because we know i go a bit smaller than them and dad goes a bit bigger than my brother so we all sort of just move up or down depending on what we all think. Prity easy really. 4 boards and 4 sails between us and sometimes when it gets windier i usually can handel the same size sail and board or they can get away with smaller gear and we just share it round because we usually have rests, get drinks and what not. Were prity lazy though and quite often dont rig another sail when we probably should, especially my dad, he quite often just uses my sail on his big board when i'm having a rest.

What about the fin - if we are talking flat water you might need a bigger fin to team with your bigger sail on the smaller board.

Wave area bit different because your not loading the fin so much and the booms are never too long for the board.

Upsize everything, worked a treat on the weekend for me, although I was more in flat/choppy water, not waves. The combination of a larger board, sail, and fin felt great, whereas if I had just rigged a larger sail, I wouldn't have made it between some lulls, larger board - maybe, the big fin made it possible to 'push against' and lean-out in the gusts to pickup speed.

I usually just let my support team handle it. I have 2 sail tech guys - one for the 2.5 - 3.9 sails, and another for the 4.0-4.5s. I won't sail in light wind, so there's no need to go any bigger.

I outsource a specialist to sort out the onshore/offshore/sideshore sails so we don't get them mixed up. As for boards, my personal shaper (or at least his assistant) is always on hand to select the right board from the truck- I never even know what the volume is.

(Or, you could always experiment with what you've got and see. Different combos will work on different days.)

...anybody else here as bored as I am? La la la la la...I'm a little teapot...

Back to the original question increasing both board and sail size will help. Yes board is easier first step then inreasing sail more effort s o is usually second step.
This big wave sail not working in surf is a bit of an urban myth.
Guys in Europe are using 7 and 8 metre sails on huge wave boards, your skill level just has to go up as you learn how to do it.
Years ago wind snobs used to say that booms on sails bigger than 5.0m were too hard to sail in waves with and that the clew got caught in the wave ! NOT TRUE. Larger wave sails just feel awkward cause people are not used to it. Practise makes perfect and gets you more waves
