Hi

Any learners going out in Melbourne later today if the seabreeze gets up? If so where are you going?

Well I got out and had a blast. Was ideal for a beginner like me..about 10 knots (if that).

And I got so close to planning, I could smell it lol. Maybe if my sail was rigged correctly..who knows...

And.. I did my first gybe manouver..and to be honest I found it a little easier to do than tacking. Was certainly a lot smother than my tacks.. but then maybe I am just crap at tacking lol.

I know all the other guys are hoping for stronger winds but another day of 10 knots will do me fine

St Kilda often has the strongest wind during the seabreeze - the direction is ok too, with it being cross-onshore so its quite safe. The shore break is quite easy too if you start a bit further down the beach towards the kites.

If I go to St Kilda, I am not sure where the kites go and where we go? Anyone give me any details?? Thanks

Speaking of Seabreeze's in Philip Bay... was down at Inverlock Inlet yesterday. I'm guessing the breeze got up to no more than about 10 knots (I normally take a floaty board when the report is not so good and had a bit of fun on it). When looking at the graph that evening I noticed it got up to around 15knots out on the bay. Are the sea breeze's generally stronger on the bay as apposed to coastal areas?

Yep , Generally seabreezes are stronger at the Northern end of the bay . From about Beamaris up they fill in and get stronger closer to the City . I have no idea of the "official" reason why that is so , but I am pretty convinced that it is the urban density close to the water . Lots of concrete heating up and sucking that seabreeze in a bit harder .

Elwood beach is the go. Nice rigging area, plenty of parking and no kites. Actually yesterday was perfect gybing practice and it started to pay off tonight with a little more breeze.

Yeah, Elwood is great. Last time I was there though (early 2007) a windsurfer cut open his foot on a broken bottle in the water. Could happen anywhere I know... just had me worried as my wife was learning there that day also.

Elwood does have a nice grassy rigging area (likewise for Point Ormond), but it can have a bit of a nasty shorebreak for a beginner - particularly if there is a hint of westerly in it.

To launch at St Kilda, you will see the kites launching from the big-flat sandy area - just go further up the beach about 100m, heading towards Port Melbourne, to the end of the trees/shrubs. Rig on the grass on the median strip in the center of Beaconsfield Pde - then carry your rig across the road - just watch for bike riders on the biking path. When launching, walk your gear back towards the kites so that you launch in front of the tree/shrubs.
