The article is rubbish based on the following inaccuracy.

The survey concluded that 7 million Australians are either overweight or obese.

However the reporter conludes that 7 million Australians are obese. So according to this reporter, if I weighed 90 kgs (which I do not) I would be in the same category as someone who weight 170 kgs. According to this reporter I would suffer or face the same health and lifestyle issues.

That is a load of rubbish. Its a scientific fact that people who are a bit overweight generally are healthier than those who are underweight.

To make this relevant, we need data from harness manufacturers. Has the proportion of Large and XL harnesses to Small and Medium harnesses sold been changing over time? Facts, please! Ditto for wetsuits and boardshorts. Although boardies on average could be going up a size because a lot of folks have started weraing them over their wetsuits...

Why drag kiters into this?
Didnt your mum tell you not to poke mad dogs with sticks? One day someone will leave the gate open and it will get out and tear you limb from limb.
Anyway, the truth is that there is a lot more SOLID windsurfers than kiters
The thought of a 170 kg kiter getting big air is extremely frightening as you wouldnt want to be under/near on re-entry.[:0

Disturbing to say the least. Finding that a third of our population is overweight. Which third I wonder. I guess you could surmise from this that 78.873 percent of surveys are fabricated and the rest are just made up.
Do we actually HAVE 9 million adults?

The article stated that 7 out of 10 males have a BMI over 25 which is considered overweight I would be more interested in the how many have a BMI over 30 as this is nearer obesity.

As for BMI.....I'm obese, and have been since I was 18! Told by doctor that it's a load of B---sh-t, and not to worry about the BMI, apparently if I were 82 kgs (preferred weight), I'd be very unwell!

Although I could lose 10kgs.....

Sailhacks right,

BMI is rubbish

We used to have to have our BMI done for work medicals and majority came back as obese - most of these guys looked that wormy that they need drenching.

The only true test is skin fold I reckon, but its much easy to take height and weight than do a proper skin fold test.

Having said that, YEAH WE"RE TURNING INTO A BUCKET OF FATTIES

Ummmmm, yeah, I didn't do too well on that one either!

I know a few footballers who would be classed as obese by the BMI, and run triathlons, play multitudes of sports, and eat & live very healthily! That said.....I know a few fatties too! I like to class myself as 'big-boned', although the love of a good feed, and a few beers doesn't help my cause!

oops - I think I just stuck my NSW chin out for QLD replies.

Aren't the same people who came up with BMI the same people who now claim that having 4 standard drinks is binge drinking [}:)]

BMI alone is meaningless except in a statistical sense for large populations. The BMI is just a ratio of weight to height squared. Rugby footballers and body builders who are very heavy for their height would have a BMI that is the same as obese people. <edit> I just checked a BMI calculator and these people would count as overweight not obese.

However the streets ARE full of fat people.

Interestingly underweightness correlates with longevity and general good health. Tests were done on simple creatures that indicate that a diet just sufficient to sustain life and growth produces a significant increase in longevity.

Historically populations (of people) that are long lived are typically thin.

Obesity correlates with heart disease and diabetes.

If you ARE fat windsurfing will do you a power of good. Exercise increases your metabolic rate not just while you do it but the effect continues for hours.

If you are overweight do the exercise, resist the urge to refuel with carbs and fat, and your fat handling enzymes will increase enabling you to use fat for fuel more easily.

To use fat for fuel you should exercise at a rate that is moderate to slow. High intensity exercise makes demands on your glycogen that fat can not keep up with. Windsurfing is a pretty good exercise in this regard. You can do it at an intensity that you can maintain for long periods and yet still feel exhausted in the end.

Now where's my beer.

So any employers truly concerned about productivity and employee health should allow windsurfers to go out whenever there is sufficient wind - to promote good health.

Now how to word this so it will fly with the bosses:

Carrying too much BMI (hopefully more muscle than fat), can't work out in gym as likelihood of heart attack etc (more from riding the bikes and the views, than the exertion) - thus windsurfing the only sport to burn fat/cholesterol whilst not overstraining the heart - hmmmm.

I'm with NotWal on this!...

In ONE YEAR I've gone from I quote a BMI of...

"18 - You are very underweight and possibly malnourished."

=to=

"21 - You have a healthy weight range for young and middle-aged adults."

So seriously come on! What the... I haven't gained much weight, its more muscle from kiting and the sports and exercise I'm doing now...

I guess thats the whole going from a young adult (20 LOL) to an adult (21).
haha It's stupid and its no fair way to calculate anyones weight in range of healthiness. imho. Putting everyone under the same umbrella is stupid!
Plus factor into it I am female, and when summer comes again, and I'm kiting more, it'll go to 17-18 again anyway!

You guys stole my friggin' thread (geez I'm in a good mood again). I don't care about BMI and whether it's accurate measurement, and I don't care if Elizabethb has love handles. Really I don't.

Points are: lots more fatsos here in N.A., more so than in Sydney, for instance.

And there's more than ever in Australia as well. Just look around when you walk in the street, simple as that.

lol mate, go back to bed and get out the other side!!!

Your point was obvious and noted already by most I am sure; the topic developed into something else and considering BMI would be how this is calculated, the accuracy of BMI and its calculation was a subliminal message of the discussion; and its inaccuracy.

Seriously, look daily in every NewsPaper around the world, and something is reported incorrectly!
PLUS

The report, released ahead of the Federal Government's obesity inquiry, presents the results of height and weight checks carried out on 14,000 adult Australians in 2005.

height and weight checks THEN, and consider now the health promotions and adverts the govt do on exercise and shiz... When the current population is 21,333,923! That's not even a CLOSE representation of an accurate survey! imho

0.065623186% of the ACTUAL POPULATION was represented in this survey.
