Isn't this new county law already in place. From what I have heard from different people the Maui County Council has already brought in the new laws. Apparently the problem is not so much that you can't have holiday rentals. The problem is that the new framework which will regulate holiday rentals hasn't been released yet.

A similar situation has been in place for New York City for the last few years. Agencies have found ways around this by drafting up "clever" contracts where you are staying as a "guest" of the owner and you pay the agency a heft "finders fee". The agency then takes they 10% cut and somehow pays the property owner.

Admidately this will up the prices for holiday rentals but given that local council both here in OZ and the USA seem to be a very greedy bunch these days I doubt that any petition will change this new law.

I singed the petition anyway... who knows...

Any one who enjoys staying on the northshore needs to be aware of this issue, believe me!! We booked our tickets a month ago assuming we would stay at any of the usual joints around paia or sprecks, and when we made the phone calls we realised how big of an issue this is!!
Apparently this law has actually been around for a while but in true hawaaian fashion it just wasnt enforced, this has now changed with places being shut down everywhere. I might add that it isnt across the board, but they are shutting them down one by one.
You can still book the places if you have connections but if they get shut down after youve payed, your basically screwed!!
So unless you enjoy staying on the southdide with all the overweight hawaian shirt wearing cocktail sipping tourists, I suggest you sign the petition.

Thats maui bra!!haha. The funniest thing I heard was that alot of the locals were complaining that the existance of the vacation rentals was increasing the value of their own properties, and therefore having to pay more tax Tough life over there eh.

Oh forgot to mention that the county is issuing permits to some places (out of the existing 800 rentals, 8 have permits!), however wait til you check out the pricing on the newly "legal" rentals.
I think we will be sipping cocktails and diggin out the hawaian shirts on the southside haha

any ideas on the hostel situation? I stayed at Banana Bungalow which was excellent... hope they haven't closed that as well.
