Dear all,
There must be an alternative to spending 2&1/2 hours in a car to find a decent wave every weekend.
Has anybody had a crack at the artificial reef? Is it worth a look given the increasing swell this weekend and where's the best place to launch?
Cheers,
Matt.

I would have a crack... but it only breaks on big swells... I dunno if 2m summer swells will cut it

Iv sailed it once but there wasn't enough swell for it to break. You could launch from leighton or dutchies and sail up or downwind to the break. There is a key hole in the reef about 100-200m downwind at the shore, i went out through there. I dont know how it would go in a big swell. Next time it is breaking ill proberly go there i think. I think it need about 2.5m for it to start working well, maby a bit more, but then there is the reef issue and tides......
Hope this helps

the place is fickle and a waste of money
probably only breaks 5/10 times a year
it doesnt break in summer
ive surfed it in winter years ago when it first was built
there was a 5m swell and about 50 blokes on it
i gave it credit then but now its @#$%

Matt,
I have sailed the artificial reef when there have been waves. It needs a low tide and swell over 2.5m (rotto). The wave only really breaks right so you have the choice of riding backside or going for one big reo against the flow of the wave. It is also very lumpy on the inside so not the best for jumping. That said there is rareley anyone there and possibly in a large swell with a southerly breeze and low tide may be just what youre looking for

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like the reef was put in the wrong place.
Back to Lano ...

Matt.
