A FISHERMAN was lucky to survive a terrifying encounter with a 4.5m white pointer shark after tumbling from his dinghy into Warnbro Sound, off Rockingham early today.

The Rockingham fisherman, 35, was in a dinghy about 7am today in Warnbro Sound when the small boat was hit from behind by a giant shark.

The man was about to anchor and begin fishing when the shark hit the boat, "nibbling'' at the outboard motor.

A Police spokesman said: "The man was in the process of anchoring the boat when he heard a noise coming from the boat's motor.

"When he turned around he noticed a shark, described as a 4.5m white pointer, nibbling at the motor.

"The man tried to push the shark away with an oar, and in the process dropped the oar in to the water, and fell overboard.''

With the dinghy's outboard motor still running, the boat cruised away from the pannicking fisherman who then began to swim frantically for shore.

"Fortunately, after a period of time in the water with the shark nearby, he was able to draw attention to a passing boat which picked him up,'' the police spokesman said.

A Sea Rescue spokesman told PerthNow the fisherman was rescued by the nearby boat and hauled out of the water to safety.

Water Police later located the man's boat about 7km from the original location, and returned it to the Point Peron boat ramp.

Water Police remind boat users of the importance of wearing life jackets when on the water, especially if alone.

The incident occurred just a few kilometres from where Port Kennedy man Brian Guest was taken by a 4m-5m white pointer in December 2008.

Mr Guest, 56, was diving for crabs in just a few metres of water when he was taken by a giant shark.

At City Beach early today a PerthNow reader reported seeing a giant dorsal fin, just 25m from the shore.

Matty said: "Went for my morning run at south City Beach, 300m down from the groyne and to my astonishment a dorsal fin the size of a bike wheel was about 25m off of the beach.

"I'm pretty sure it was a great white.''

I always found that sailing up to a fishing spot rather than using the OB was a good way to not scare off the fish. looks like I was wrong

This raises an interesting question.

Is Pannicking the correct spelling? Or Panicing? Paniccing? Panicking? Pannicing?

None of them look quite right, do they?

Yeah, I reckon he was just sharpening his teeth before breakfast, but the fisherman's poo in the water must have put him off his snack.

I don't get it, why try to push the shark away, as if that's going to deter a 4.5m meter shark that already isn't deterred by a spinning boat prop. Why not just crank the throttle and get the hell out of there.

That's it, I'm taking Safety Bay off my Windsurfing destinations!

I heard that they only eat kiters, so as long as you don't kite, Safety Bay should be fine.

I am surprised noone has commented on the stupidity of this whole situation... you got to be pretty dumb to fall in off a boat while its in gear and there is a 4.5m white attacking your boat 5km from shore. I mean really wtf?? Makes for good news though. If he had died would he have received a darwin award?

Bit annoyed about the sensationallism attatched to this story. You read stuff like "the man eating monster..." clearly it isnt that into eating people, because it could have eating this guy without even trying.

Sacrificial anodes are passive aren't they? So it's like just dropping a battery in the ocean, not something that pulses?

Either way I think that a GWS would have no trouble distinguishing a fish from an outboard!

they reckon the shark shields for surfers emit an electric current that repulses the sharks when they get close. I read somewhere that the problem is the pulse attacts them in the first place and only repulses them when they get too close.
So what's the chance of a charging GW turning away at the last second, when hungry and who is game enough to test the theory?

It certainly wont stop me from participating in the sport i love.

Just throwing this idea out there but maybe this guy was pissed, stood up to have a leak, fell overboard. Then made up the shark storey to make it sound cool. I am sceptical of most shark reports now that there is about 100 different stories a week.
