The biggest mistake people make is going too small too soon. Buy a 130l to 150l board second hand until you can water start, use the foot straps and occasionally jibe. Then buy a 120l board as your first short board. You will probably keep your big board for light days.
As for the rig.
Allum boom is fine. Chinook is good.
The mast needs to have some carbon in it and must match the sail.
Buy a 5.5 to 6m sail as a starting point
We are talking hundreds of dollars not thousands.

I can water start. When I was in Vassiliki, I was told to get a 120 L when I get back home, or "I'd be bored soon". I was told that the magic ride 118 is like a 135 traditional shape board because of its width.
Anyway, I feel like going new because I don't want to mix and match gear (don't want to think about it too much). Also, intermediate gear seems thin on the ground second hand (I see lots of wave boards).
