reading the thread regarding wettie storage and the resulting malfunctions due to poor storage got me thinking about gear failure and the embarrassing f**k ups that we have to endure. For instance, on a recent trip to Lombok we knew the sun was gonna fry us during the eight hour trip. My mate shelled out 25 bucks on a surf hat (the ones with the straps) and was pretty happy with his purchase. That was until he got smashed by a solid wave after attempting a late and pretty deep takeoff. i was in the channel paddling back out and watched the carnage unfold, after about 15 seconds he bobbed up for air, with the recent purchase wrapped around his face. The next wave engulfed him and he came up after a thorough working over with the thing still covering his face, twice more this happened before he came up (found out later he was using his leggy to get back up) without the cursed headwear and managed to paddle over to the channel half f**ked and a little spooked. He surfed hatless for the next two hours, the hat was green (see local myth)

On the same trip, first day went to Bingan in the arvo, bought a couple of pairs of boardies. I chucked a pair on and hit the water. Caught a nice one after about twenty frustrating minutes pulled in but didn't come out, popped up and found myself a bit inside as a pretty good set continued to roll in. Duckdived the first one, pretty solid wave but managed to get through and back into position. Sitting on my board I felt a cool feeling around the crotch and a bit more movement than usual, upon inspection I'd blown out the crotch and most of the material covering my arse, leaving the wedding tackle exposed to the elements! Being a kneelo it wasn't gonna be good look getting one in so I paddled in through the gap in the reef to the north of the lineup. I was then faced with the walk back to the van, there wasn't much left of the boardies so I just knda placed the board in front of me and trudged up that hill past the crew in the Warungs and those walking down to the beach!!
Anyone got a similar tale? wetty blown off, board snaps, forget the wax but go anyway, leggy snaps or caught inside stories, getting worked at keyholes or worst pounding ,injuries, stuff like that...

Copped a flogging at solid cobbles bout two years ago. Was wearing a springy and the wave managed to unzip my wetty underwater and with all the rag-dolling going on over the cheesegrater by the time I popped up I was all contorted as my wetty was half off one shoulder and nearly down to my waist. Copped another one on the head which washed me the rest of the way in. Couldn't believe it.
Another time on the NE side of rotto, whilst duckdiving and still holding onto my board, got flipped upside down and pushed half under a little underwater ledge. Totally destroyed my board and scraped up my knuckles and freaked me out a bit, and it was only 4 foot!
