most of you older guys would know what i'm talking about. Now i need some advice. My ear canal has boney growth now with only a match head sized opening. I want to hold off getting it drilled for as long as possible.I've learnt to use aqua ear, syringe to remove wax, wear a hood when surfing and tried numerous plugs to keep water out but seems to still get infected. What do you guys use/recommend?

Get it fixed. I had it done 15yrs ago and have not had a single problem since - (and I also swim in public lap pools).

Try Doc Pro Plugs if you haven't already. I've suffered from the same old man surfers ailment for quite a few years now and these babies are the only things that have worked for me. They are a fitted silicone reusable plug that you need to be sized for. I get mine from Western hearing services and I think there about $25 a shot. I get about a year out of a set so pretty good value unless you lose them. They come with an anoying bit of fishing line holding the pair together which I bust off straight up. I've lost the old one in solid surf but most of the time all good. Look on the bright side, to get Surfers/Swimmers ear you must of spent plenty of time in the water. All power to the old boys

I had to see an ear throat and nose bloke about an unrelated subject. He had a look at my ears and said one was 80% grown over and the other is 75% grown over. He said I could get through the winter and to not leave it to long after. The operation goes a lot easier if they can see the ear drum so he knows how far to push the drill. One night in the hospital 6 weeks out of the water. The longer you leave it the worse the infections will get. (apparently) I am booking in for the drill near to christmas. I figure it will be summer and the waves are crap and I can still skate. I find these days when I get pounded and sucked down my ears hurt. I havn't been able to equalise them for about 2 years. Old blokes need a bit of a service now and again.

I don't remember it being that painful (and my R ear was 100% closed off - it was worse than the photos/diagrams in his text book!).

And I don't remember missing anywhere near 6 weeks of surfing - but knowing me I probably got to 3wks and went "she'll be right.." and got back into it.

have had both mine done and are good now. surgery and side effects negligent but the 6weeks out coincided with a good run of swell at scabs in fact probably "best ever". Let us all know when you're goin in so we can wax up and prepare for that "once in a lifetime swell"!!!!!

i would do it in summer next time around, which will be 10 years time apparently, if i dont wear hood/gath in cold water. wearing gath atmo but beging to think.......f#$@#k it in 10 years time surely a pil!!!! or laser non invasive 10min surgery with 1/2 hour no surf!!!!!!!!!!!!!

symptoms of 80% + closed ears as aPE teacher....hell. everything sounds like you are inside a fish bowl, can hear the noisy little buggers but cant pinpoint the actual noise source..frustrating as ^%$#$%$#

GET IT DONE

Have told the story before but it bears repeating. Had ears both drilled 15 years ago and started to get immediate exostosis regrowth. Tried Docs plugs but hated them, wore a Gath hat for a few years with marginal success. A few years ago I chanced upon an online product called "Surfers Ear Drops" from Sassal Health over East. They are like Aqua Ear (alcohol based) but there is something else in them which seems to stop infections really well. I just fill the ear canal up with a couple of drops at the end of the day before falling asleep. Used them last year at Balian and after heavy rains the water was pretty suss. Have not had a single ear infection since using them. They cost around $25 a bottle which lasts ages. Hope this helps.

So, saw the doctor the other week after I gave myself a concussion.
She looks in my ears and tells me I've got the worse surfer's ear that she's ever seen in person.
Great...and I'm only 24, so don't know if she's just being dramatic.

Can anyone in Perth recommend someone who may have specialised in this kind of thing? Want to get it looked at.

docs pro plugs are no good, when i perforrated my ear drum i was told to use them, but they just don't work. The best thing i foung was blu tack as you can mould it to any ear shape, its not uncomfortable and its waterproof. as far as surfers ear blu tac will keep the water out, if you dont want the op thats the best option by far. you may get tenitis from the op but it should be temporary, hope that helps.

Stuart Miller - West Perth. I had mine done by him, all up about 6 to 8 weeks out of the water. Had another Doc comment that he did good work when I last checked my ears.

Cheers
